2013-14 Season in Review

Team

  • The 2013-14 Falcons improved on their previous year's record by 5.5 games and posted the program's 18th winning season in the last 19 years
  • The Falcons opened the season with a seven-game winning streak, a stretch in which the team averaged 90 points per game
  • Bentley's scoring average of 81.6 was up more than 15 points over the 2012-13 season and the program's best since in 18 years (86.1 in 1995-96)
  • Bentley led the Northeast-10 in three-pointers (10.1), three-pointers attempted (25.3), three-point accuracy (.401) and free throw percentage (.769)
  • Bentley's three-point percentage of .401 was the third best in program history
  • In the NCAA Division II statistics, the Falcons were fourth in fewest fouls committed (14.6), eighth in three-pointers (10.1), 12th in three-point percentage (.401) and 14th in free throw percentage (.769)
  • Bentley finished in the top four in Division II in fewest fouls committed for the eighth time in the last nine seasons
  • Bentley was 13-1 when shooting at least .500 from the field with the .471 field goal percentage the third best of the Lawson era
  • Over the last three games, Bentley made an incredible 43 of 46 free throws (.935), missing just once in each contest
  • Bentley was 14-4 when outrebounding the opposition
  • Bentley was ranked 21st in the Dec. 3 NABC Division II coaches poll, the ninth time in the last 13 seasons the Falcons have spent at least one week in the top 25 

32           Tyler McFarland, So, F, 6-5, Rockport, Maine (Camden Hills HS/Cushing Academy)

  • 2nd-team All-Northeast-10 Conference selection
  • Led team in scoring with his 18.0 average the best by a Bentley forward since J.D. Asselta in 1995-96
  • Also led team in total points (521), rebounds (203), rebounds per game (7.0), offensive rebounds (63), defensive rebounds (140), field goals (194), field goal percentage (.540), three-point percentage (.495), free throw percentage (.880) and blocks (24)
  • First player in program history to lead the team in scoring both as a freshman and a sophomore
  • First player since Sean Wood (1990-91, 1991-92) to lead team in scoring and rebounding in consecutive seasons
  • Led the Northeast-10 in three-point percentage and was second in free throw percentage, fifth in points and field goals, sixth in field goal percentage and seventh in scoring
  • On Bentley's all-time lists, ranks second in free throw percentage (.859) and minutes played (33.2), sixth in scoring (16.8) and 11th in rebounding (7.7)
  • His .495 three-point percentage was the third best in program history for a single season
  • Broke a 46-year-old school record for field goal accuracy in a game by making 12-of-12 at American International during a 32-point effort Jan. 18. Included were four three-pointers and he also made all four of his free throws
  • Had 11 20-point games, including a career-high 34 in the season-opener against Concordia Nov. 8 and a pair of 32-point performances (Southern New Hampshire Nov. 26, AIC Jan. 18)
  • Made at least 60 percent of his field goal attempts ten times and had multiple three-pointers in 13 contests
  • Finished the season with 21 consecutive free throws made
  • Had four double-doubles (11p-12r vs. Wilmington Nov. 9, 15-10 vs. Assumption Nov. 20, 17-11 at Merrimack Dec. 4, 24-11 at Franklin Pierce Dec. 10)
  • One of two NE-10 players to shoot at least .500 overall, .400 from three and .800 free throw, a distinction he shared with teammate Alex Furness
  • In the NCAA Division II statistics, was 26th in free throw percentage, 56th in field goals, 75th in field goal percentage, 92nd in points and 96th in scoring average
  • Northeast-10/Spalding co-Player of the Week twice (Dec. 2, Jan. 20)
  • Northeast-10 Weekly Honor Roll seven times (Nov. 11, 18, Dec. 9, 16, Feb. 3, 17, Mar. 3)
  • Career totals of 923 points and 421 rebounds in 55 games (all starts)

15           Jasper Grassa, Sr, G, 5-11, Lynn, Mass. (Lynn Classical HS)

  • Finished career as Bentley's all-time leader in three-pointers made with 285, surpassing the former standard of 276. He broke the school record Feb. 22 against Stonehill
  • Made 80 three-pointers as a senior, the third straight year he had at least that many. All other players in program, history have a total of four seasons with at least 80
  • Was second on the team in scoring, averaging 14.4 points along with 4.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.1 steals
  • Ranks 21st on Bentley's all-time scoring list with 1,370 points
  • Honorable mention All-Northeast-10 as a senior
  • Had multiple three-pointers in 23 of 29 games, with a high of seven Jan. 8 at Le Moyne
  • Erupted for career-high 35 points, on 10-of-11 shooting with six three-pointers, Nov. 13 at Saint Anselm. That was the most by a Falcon player since Tim Forbes had 35 against Southern New Hampshire in March 2005, and included his 1,000th career point
  • Made the final 21 free throws of his career, finishing 15th in program history in free throw percentage (.808)
  • Had a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double against Merrimack Feb. 11
  • Was fourth in the NE-10 in three-pointers made and also eighth in free throw percentage (.808) and 12th in minutes (984)
  • Was 41st in Division II in three-pointers and 59th in three-point percentage (.388)
  • Among active Division II players, finished the season seventh in three-pointers made and attempted
  • Northeast-10/Spalding Player of the Week Nov. 18
  • Northeast-10 Weekly Honor Roll Jan. 13

13           Keegan Hyland, Jr, G, 6-3, South Portland, Maine (South Portland HS)

  • Averaged 12.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 22.4 minutes while appearing in the first 20 games of his collegiate career
  • Started the season's final five contests and produced 18.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists a game in that role
  • Outstanding student who earned Academic All-Northeast-10 honors
  • Averaged 22.1 points per 40 minutes, the seventh best output in the NE-10
  • Bentley's leading scorer (19.5 ppg) in the Northeast-10 Championships
  • Scored 12 points off the bench against Concordia on Nov. 8, his first game experience since his senior year of high school (2009-10)
  • Scored in doubles 14 times with a high of 25 at Saint Rose Feb. 28 in the first round of the Northeast-10 Championships
  • On the road, shot 56 percent overall and 52 percent from three while averaging 14.7 points
  • After missing his first 11 three-pointers, shot .535 from downtown over his last 15 games
  • Had his first career double-double Feb. 25 vs. Franklin Pierce (18 points, 10 rebounds)
  • Missed nine games from Nov. 13-Dec. 21 due to mono
  • Northeast-10 Weekly Honor Roll twice (Feb. 24, Mar. 3)

14           Alex Furness, So, G, 6-5, Wells, Maine (Wells HS/Cushing Academy)

  • Started all 29 games and averaged 10.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists
  • Shot .517 overall, made .449 from three-point land and shot .818 from the line
  • One of two NE-10 players to shoot at least .500 overall, .400 from three and .800 free throw, a distinction he shared with teammate Tyler McFarland
  • One of three NE-10 players who averaged at least 10 points, four rebounds and four assists (Nate Champion, Le Moyne, and Tylon Smith, Southern Connecticut)
  • Scored in doubles 17 times with a pair of 20-point games (27 vs. Assumption Nov. 20, 20 vs. Southern New Hampshire six days later)
  • Five or more assists 13 times, with a high of nine Feb. 25 against Franklin Pierce
  • Nine or more rebounds three times, including 10 at American International Jan. 18
  • Was second on the team in defensive rebounds (120)
  • Hit 13-footer in lane with 2.4 seconds left to give Bentley 95-94 win over Merrimack Feb. 11
  • In the Northeast-10, was third in assist-turnover ratio (2.6), fifth in three-point accuracy, sixth in total assists (122), eighth in assists per game and 12th in field goal percentage
  • Was 36th in Division II nationally in assist-turnover ratio and was 90th in assists
  • Northeast-10 Weekly Honor Roll three times (Nov. 25, Dec. 2, Jan. 27)

33           Andrew Shaw, Jr, F, 6-5, Saco, Maine (Thornton Academy)

  • Averaged 10.0 points and 4.2 rebounds while playing 23.7 minutes a game
  • Was second on the team in three-pointers (54) and blocked shots (22)
  • Erupted for a career-high 24 points and knocked down five of eight three-pointers in Falcons' NE-10 playoff win at Saint Rose Feb. 28
  • Scored in doubles 15 times, including a 22-point effort against Wilmington (Del.) Nov. 9. Tied his career high with six three-pointers, in just eight attempts, against the Wildcats
  • Bentley was 10-4 when he had multiple three-pointers and was 11-2 when he made at least half his shots
  • During the second half of games, shot 52 percent overall, 47 percent from three and 74 percent from the line
  • Was 13th in Northeast-10 in three-point accuracy and 14th in three-pointers
  • Had a double-double against Saint Anselm Nov. 13, 13 points and 10 rebounds
  • Scored his 500th career point and buried his 100th career three-pointer Dec. 21 vs. Goldey-Beacom
  • On Bentley's all-time lists, is 10th in three-point percentage (.396) and 19th in three-pointers (127)
  • 664 points and 251 rebounds in 67 career games (35 starts)
  • Career averages of 9.9 points and 3.7 rebounds 

20           J.P. Koury, Jr, G, 6-4, Red Bank, N.J. (CBA)

  • Averaged 8.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.5 steals in 24 starts before a shoulder injury prematurely ended his season
  • Shot .508 from two-point range and .469 overall
  • Led team in steals (37) and was third on the squad in minutes per game (28.5), average rebounds (5.3) and assists (63)
  • Was seventh in the Northeast-10 in steals per game and 11th in total steals (37)
  • Scored in doubles nine times, including eight of the first 13 games. Included was a season-high 21 points against Post on Jan. 4
  • Collected career-high 11 rebounds, all at the defensive end, Feb. 1 at Pace, and had two other games with nine boards
  • Seven steals against Goldey-Beacom Dec. 21 was the most by a Bentley player since Mike Quinn in Dec. 2010. He also had 12 points and eight rebounds against the Lightning
  • Extended the school record for consecutive free throws made to 36, a streak that lasted from Jan. 23 to Nov. 13, 2013
  • Scored his 500th career point Dec. 7 against St. Michael's
  • Named to the Northeast-10 Weekly Honor Roll Jan. 6
  • Career totals of 626 points, 309 assists, 133 assists and 94 steals
  • In 77 career games (50 starts), has averaged 8.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.2 steals 

23           Shaq Phelps, So, F, 6-3, Linden, N.J. (Linden HS)

  • Saw action in 28 games off the bench, averaging 12.8 minutes, 5.3 points and 2.4 rebounds
  • Shot 45 percent overall, 41 percent from three and just under 80 percent from the line
  • Averaged 6.1 points and 14.7 minutes over the second half of the season, up from 4.4 and 10.9 during the first half
  • In season's final three games, made five of eight three points and averaged 9.7 points
  • Scored in doubles six times, including a season-best 13 at Franklin Pierce Dec. 10 and at Assumption Feb. 6
  • Was third on team in offensive rebounds (31) despite being seventh in minutes
  • Career averages of 4.7 points and 2.3 rebounds with 242 points and 119 rebounds in 51 games 

21           Ferguson Duke, Fr, G, 6-2, Dartmouth, N.S. (Hun School)

  • Appeared in 24 games during his rookie season, averaging 10.2 minutes, 3.2 points and 1.5 rebounds
  • Shot .441 from the field with half of his 26 field goals coming from downtown
  • Season-high nine points at Stonehill Nov. 23
  • Also had eight points against Goldey-Beacom Dec. 21 and vs. Stonehill Feb. 22 

10           Matt Barr, Fr, G, 6-0, Stratham, N.H. (Cushing Academy)

  • Provided backcourt depth in all 29 games, averaging 10.1 minutes, 2.4 points and 1.2 assists
  • Season-best eight points twice in his first month in a Bentley uniform, against Holy Family Nov. 17 and at Stonehill six days later
  • Delivered six assists vs. Concordia Nov. 8 in his collegiate debut
