Murphy Leads Bentley to 3-0 Sweep of Southern Connecticut in NE10 Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Bentley University women's volleyball team opened Northeast-10 Conference play Friday night with a three-game sweep of Southern Connecticut State at the Pelz Gymnasium.

Powering the 9-4 Falcons to the 25-20, 25-13, 25-19 victory was senior captain Ingrid Murphy (Cotuit, Mass./Barnstable HS) as she stuffed the box score with nine kills, 20 digs and a pair of aces.

The opening set was the most competitive of the three as there were 11 ties and four lead changes before Bentley closed with an 11-6 burst. Two of Murphy's kills came during that run.

The momentum carried over into the second with Bentley jumping out to a 13-5 advantage and easily going on to go up 2-0 in the match. Junior Maddy Kelley (Fitchburg, Wis./Verona Area HS) was a force in the second with five kills and no errors in nine swings.

Two kills from sophomore Rachel Vitko (Dover, N.H./Dover HS), with an ace from junior Natalie Thom (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) sandwiched in between, closed out the third set.

Kelley and Vitko finished with eight and seven kills, respectively. Graduate setter Amanda Parker (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North HS) provided 20 assists and 10 digs, and sophomore libero Jazzy Burke (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George Central HS) had 17 digs against the Owls (8-6, 0-1 NE10).

Bentley limited Southern to a .074 hitting percentage with 27 kills and 18 errors.

The next action for the Falcons is the Dig Lavender fundraiser on Tuesday, with Southern New Hampshire providing the opposition.
