On This Day, 2018: Bruno Leads Bentley Past Saint Anselm in Key Early Season Showdown

On September 18, 2018, behind a dominating performance from junior middle blocker Rachel Bruno, the Bentley women's volleyball team posted a 3-1 win over Saint Anselm in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Dana Center. The scores were 25-20, 25-27, 25-15 and 25-18.

Bruno hit .484 and filled the stat sheet with 17 kills (tying her career-best at the time), seven blocks, three aces and 24 points as the Falcons took down a team they fell to three times in 2017. That included a five-setter in the NE10 quarters that ended the Bentley season.

Coach Joey Pacis also received significant contributions from his team's younger players with Kirsten Segaline, Mallory Burbage and Shannon Ngo all reaching double figures in kills. Segaline, a sophomore, hit .367 with 12 kills, 10 digs and two blocks. Burbage, a sophomore in her first season of collegiate action, amassed 11 kills, 14 digs, five blocks and three aces, and Ngo, a freshman, provided 11 kills and three blocks.

Bentley also received a 41-assist, 14-dig double-double from senior setter and co-captain Krista Campbell.

The Falcons (6-7, 2-0 NE10) rode a hot start from Burbage (2 kills, 2 aces, 1 block in the match's first 12 serves) to grab a 10-2 lead and led the opening set from the initial serve.

After the Hawks (9-5, 1-1 NE10) took the second, Bentley used a 14-3 spurt to seize control of the third set, 19-10. Three of Burbage's blocks came during that stretch.

A kill by Ngo, with the fourth set tied at 3-3, put Bentley in front to stay and she later closed out the match with another kill.
