Bentley Volleyball Drops Two in Own Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. – Georgian Court University rallied to pull out a five-set victory over Bentley University to hand the Falcons their second loss of the day in their own six-team invitational tournament. The scores were 25-19, 23-25, 25-16, 21-25 and 13-15.

The Falcons, who were swept in three by a strong California University of Pennsylvania team earlier on Saturday, finished the two-day event with a 1-2 record, the victory coming by a count of 3-0 over Queens College Friday evening.

Bentley took a 7-3 lead in the decisive fifth set against the Lions, using a 5-0 run that included two kills from All-Tournament selection and senior Grace Conner (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos HS) and an ace by sophomore Kelsey Buckner (San Marino, Calif./San Marino HS).

The Falcons were still up four at 9-5, but then Georgian Court ran off six in a row to claim the lead and never trailed again. Bentley tied the set at 13-all on a Buckner kill, but the final two points went on the visitor's side of the scoreboard. An attack error made it 14-13 and a kill by Maria Antimisiaris (Chania, Crete) ended the day.

Conner powered the Falcons with 11 kills and a .421 hitting percentage, and also was in on six blocks. Buckner and freshman Jaci Buscher (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain HS) both followed with 10 kills and four blocks, with Buckner also contributing five aces. Sophomore Simone Silvera (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) had seven blocks, freshman Kyana Miller (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Acad.) recorded 21 assists, and sophomore Alex Tator (Los Angeles, Calif./Marlborough School) was credited with 18 assists.

Georgian Court, which improved to 4-6 despite hitting only .070, received 12 kills and 14 digs from sophomore Tatiana Rodriguez (Rio Grande, P.R.).

California, 10-1 on the season, never trailed in its 25-7, 25-19, 25-16 victory over Bentley in the morning match. Senior outside hitter Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa.), the tournament's co-MVP, led the Vulcans with 10 kills, and All-Tournament selection Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa.) provided eight kills with a .462 success rate, 16 assists, two aces and two blocks.

Bentley, 2-6, will visit Assumption College Tuesday night for a Northeast-10 Conference match.
