On This Day, 2018: Mattson Breaks Own School Record in 300 during GBTC Invitational

On January 21, 2018, Bentley junior Stephanie Mattson continued her assault on the Falcon women's track and field record book as she broke her own school record in the 300 meters during the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational at Harvard University.

Mattson finished first among 24 competitors in the event with her time of 41.57 seconds improving on the mark she set at the same meet a year ago by 1.01 seconds. She won the race by more than a half-second over Liz Pellegrini, who was competing for the Boston-North Track Club.

Bentley placed three others in the top ten of the seldom-contested 300 with junior Abby Forman fifth in 44.93, sophomore Dominique Balzora-Rivert sixth (45.03) and sophomore Chantel Lewis ninth (45.31). Forman's effort elevated her to seventh on the program's all-time list and Balzora-Rivert moved to ninth.

Mattson's afternoon also included a pair of third-place finishes, among 65 student-athletes in the 60 yard dash and among 25 in the long jump. She ran the 60 in 8.22 seconds in the prelims and improved to 8.10 in the finals, and cleared 17 feet, 7 inches in the long jump.

Balzora-Rivert also cracked the top ten in the 60, finishing in 8.35, and her day also saw her finish second in a field of 11 in the triple jump (33'11.5").

Bentley had a pair of third-place finishes, freshman Sydney Hurwitz and junior Tina Touri. Hurwitz, after qualifying for the finals of the 60 hurdles in 9.91, turned in a 9.79 in the finals, fourth best in program history. She also was fifth in the long jump with a distance of 15'9.75". Touri's 2:28.73 in the 800 was a new personal best by 2.62 seconds.

Other highlights for the Falcons included sophomore Paige Fehskens placing fourth of 24 in the mile (5:26.49), classmate Abbie Newman fifth of 22 in the 1,000 (3:13.97) and senior Marianne Bartolotta eighth in the same event (3:15.19).
