Varsell Earns All-America Honors for 2nd Time with 4th Place Finish at NCAA Div. II Championships

TURLOCK, Calif. -- Just as she did indoors back in early March, Bentley University sophomore Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS) finished fourth in the 800 meters at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held Saturday night at California State University - Stanislaus.

Now a two-time All-America, Varsell posted a time of 2:15.98, finishing 1.45 seconds back of Shawnee Carnett of Concord College, who claimed the national championship in 2:14.53. Amanda Raudabaugh of Shippensburg University took second in 2:15.11, and Chanell Caldwell of Grand Valley State was third in 2:15.29.

Varsell entered the championships with the 16th best seed time amongst 17 entrants, and posted the seventh best qualifying time in Friday's prelims, a school record 2:11.07.

The national championship race concluded an outstanding sophomore year for Varsell, who earned the first two women's track All-America awards in Bentley University history, twice earned All-New England honors, captured a pair of Northeast-10 Conference Championships and turned in 11 school record-breaking performances.

Bentley tied for 40th place in the team standings, and was one of only two East Region institutions to score in the meet.
