Varsell Captures Northeast-10 800 Meters Title in School & Meet Record Time

LOWELL, Mass. -- Less than three months after winning the Northeast-10 Conference indoor championship in the 800 meters, Bentley University sophomore Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS) added the NE-10 outdoor 800 title to her ever-growing resume Saturday afternoon.

Competing in the 2011 Northeast-10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at UMass-Lowell, Varsell led wire-to-wire en route to a winning time of 2:12.62. It marked the third straight week she's broken the 800 school record, bettering the mark she set last week at Stonehill by six-hundredths of a second.  It also shattered the meet record in the event, 2:14.24, which had been posted by Danielle Moore of Southern Connecticut State in 2009.

Varsell won the race by 3.86 seconds over Titilayo Vanriel of Southern Connecticut.

In addition, Varsell helped Bentley's 4x400 relay team finish second in 4:04.37. That quartet also included freshman Christine Smith (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic HS), junior Natalie Caldwell (Greenbrae, Calif./Redwood HS) and sophomore Andrea Crowley (Bourne/Bourne HS).

Earning bronze at the conference championships was junior Keisha Johnson (Randolph/ Randolph HS) in the triple jump, with her distance of 36 feet a season-best.

Bentley's other top ten performances during the meet's second day were all achieved by freshmen. Ashley Nichols (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor HS) was sixth in the 5,000 (18;56.38), Brittany Pandolph (Tewksbury/Tewksbury HS) placed seventh in the shot (36'6.25") and Smith was ninth in the 400 (a personal best 1:01.42).

As a team, Bentley tied for sixth place, with 42 points.  Southern Connecticut State claimed the team title, outpointing runner-up University of New Haven 196-153.
