Bentley Set to Take on Merrimack in Northeast-10 Quarterfinals

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University earned the No. 4 seed in the Northeast-10 Championship, and they will host No. 5 seed Merrimack in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday at 1:00 pm.

The Falcons went 8-4 in the regular season to earn the No. 4 seed and the right to host a quarterfinal match. They beat out both Adelphi and Merrimack who both finished 8-4 as well, by virtue of defeating both teams in the regular season. They defeated the Warriors 5-4 on Oct. 8, and won at Adelphi 5-4 back on Sept. 25.

Wednesday's match will mark Bentley's first appearance in the postseason since the 2013-14 season, when they were defeated by Stonehill in the quarterfinals.

In that win over Merrimack in the regular season, Bentley won four of six singles matches to overcome a 2-1 deficit after doubles. Sophomore Hannah Fabianski (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington HS) and junior Katie Brandow (East Northport, N.Y./Northport HS) earned the point in doubles. They defeated Danielle Dunn and Mackenzie Blair in the No. 2 match, 8-6.

In the singles matches, freshman Katie Tynan (West Barnstable/Barnstable HS) in the No. 4 match, senior Susan Stowe (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) in the No. 5 match and Brandow in the No. 6 match banked points for the Falcons with stretch sets victories. Tynan defeated Dunn 6-2, 6-2, while Stowe topped Blair 6-0, 6-4 and Brandow knocked off Mia Briggs 6-1, 6-1.

That left the deciding point down to Tiffany Suchanek (Waterville, Maine/Waterville HS) and Lauren Persson in the No. 3 match. Persson won the first set 6-2, but Suchanek rallied and won the next two sets for a three set, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory to give Bentley the match.

The winner of Wednesday's match will go on the semifinals on Friday, where top seed Stonehill awaits. The other quarterfinal on Wednesday will see No. 3 seed Assumption host No. 6 seed Adelphi, with the winner of that match to face No. 2 seed Southern New Hampshire in the semis.

The championship match will take place on Sunday at 1:00 pm, and will be hosted by the highest remaining seed.
