On This Day, 2012: Edwards Leads Bentley to 2nd Straight NEISDA Championship, Finishes Weekend with 7 Golds

On February 19, 2012, freshman Nadine Edwards completed an amazing weekend while helping the Bentley women's swimming and diving team repeat as New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association champions in White River Junction, Vt.

Bentley, which accumulated 20 medals (including 10 gold) during the championships, finished with 1,552.5 points, nearly 200 more than runner-up Keene State (1358). Assumption was third with 1061.5 points, and the top five in the 23-team field also included Eastern Connecticut State and Roger Williams.

Edwards competed in seven events during the three-day meet and earned gold in all of them, three individual and four relay.  In the process, she was part of five school records, including the 400 yard free relay during the final day of action.

Edwards' third individual gold came in the meet's most grueling race, the 1650 freestyle. She completed that race in 17:50.57 to win by about two-and-a-half seconds.

Edwards also anchored Bentley's 400 free relay, which finished in a school record 3:34.19. Preceding her into the pool were freshman Kellen Power and juniors Jessica Hodsdon and Monika Drogosz. Power's opening 100 of 52.62 broke the school record she set earlier in the night by four-tenths of a second.

Power had one of the two silver medals Bentley earned Sunday night, with her 53.02 bettering the standard she had set a year ago at the same meet by 0.57 seconds. The other silver was achieved by senior Molly Murphy in the 100 individual medley (1:02.87).

Junior Taryn Dooley took third in the 50 backstroke, her time of 28.04 seconds breaking her own school record by about a quarter of a second.

Bentley also had two fourths on Sunday night, Hodsdon in the 200 breast (2:25.36) and senior Susie Boretti in the 1650 free (18:23.20).

During the weekend, Bentley broke school records a total of 14 times.
