On This Day, 2019: Bentley Finishes 4th in Gompei Invitational; 3 School Records Set on Day 3

On December 8, 2019, the Gompei Invitational at Worcester Polytechnic Institute concluded with the Bentley men's and women's swimming and diving teams finishing fourth among 13 teams with a combined three-day score of 4028.5 points.

Sunday's highlights during the final day of competition included two school records by members of the men's team and one from the women's team.

Freshmen Kathryn Galvin finished third in the 100 yard freestyle with her time of 52.34 seconds breaking a seven-year-old school record, held by Kellen Power, by 0.28 seconds.

Sophomore Mark Zoda took possession of a record that had been in place since 2010 with a 26.49 in the prelims of the 50 breaststroke. He also bettered the former mark in the finals, placing fifth in 26.60. Sam Laden had held the old mark after swimming a 26.86.

Zoda also lost possession of the school record he set in the 100 individual medley at last year's Gompei, 53.94. Classmate Zach Papsco, in an exhibition race, posted a 52.91.

Bentley had two second-place finishes on the day, including sophomore Emily Sweet in the 200 backstroke (2:08.23). The other came in the 400 free relay with Galvin combining with sophomore Lucy Slowe, junior Emily LaRovere and freshman Dariana Gonzales for a time of 3:33.73.

Individual fourths were achieved by Zoda in the 100 freestyle (46.77), sophomore Rona Mejiritski in the 200 butterfly (2:10.54) and junior Caroline Logozzo in the one-meter diving (370.90).

Slowe, Galvin and Zoda combined with junior Paul Homorodean for a fourth in the mixed 400 free relay (3:22.00). Bentley was also fourth in the men's 200 free relay with Homorodean, Papsco, junior Clayton Bennice and Zoda turning in a 3:09.84.
