Wheaton Captures Final Relay to Spoil Bentley’s Opener, 155-139

NORTON, Mass. – The Bentley University women's swimming team entered the final event, the 200 yard freestyle relay, down seven points and needing at least a first and a third to record a season-opening victory.

However, it was Wheaton College who won the relay and also recorded a third-place finish, and as a result, the Falcons dropped a 155-139 decision to the host Lyons at the Balfour Natatorium Saturday.

Bentley's top relay of sophomore Brooke Jameson (Bedford/Bedford HS), freshman Lea Guldemond (West Newbury/Central Catholic HS), sophomore Hannah Rauch (Orchard Park, N.Y./ Orchard Park HS) and senior Kaitlin McGahie (Boylston/Tahanto Regional HS) trailed their counterparts from Wheaton by 1.60 seconds, finishing second in 1:43.47.

McGahie and Jameson were both double-winners for the Falcons. McGahie was first to the wall in the 50 freestyle (25.61) and the 100 free (55.18) while Jameson's wins came in the 1000 free (11:21.88) and the 500 free (5:31.90).

Bentley's other double-winner was sophomore Kate Kaduboski (Dedham/Dedham HS) with first-place finishes in the 200 back (2:11.10) and the 200 individual medley (2:15.51).

Also placing first for the Falcons were sophomore Melissa Viator (Lubbock, Texas/ Lubbock HS) in the 200 free (2:01.63), junior Anne Warren (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron HS) in the 200 butterfly (2:18.70) and junior Emily Niemiec (Meriden, Conn./Francis T. Maloney HS) in the 200 breaststroke (2:32.91).

Bentley will open its home schedule and seek its first win next Sunday when it hosts Le Moyne College (1 pm).
