Bentley Tripped Up by No. 4 Stonehill, 2-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley played a tight game with nationally 4th ranked Stonehill, but the Skyhawks scored a goal towards the end of each half to come away with a 2-0 victory on Tuesday afternoon in Northeast-10 women's soccer.

Bentley tested Stonehill keeper Jamie Block on a number of occasions, but the junior goalie stopped all five shots on goal she faced.

The first goal came 40 minutes into the first half when forward Meredith Moore scored off a long free kick. The Skyhawks were given the kick 10 yards over the halfway line, and the ball was delivered into the penalty box by Erin O'Brien. The ball dropped between several players, but Moore won a battle for it and scored from close range to put them up 1-0.

In the 2nd half Bentley created a couple of strong scoring chances. A cross by senior Jenny Lewis (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) from the deep left corner in the penalty area was controlled by Ana Tantum (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull HS), who then turned and shot on goal, only for the attempt to go just wide.

An closer opportunity came in the 62nd minute from freshman Kelly Donlon (Meriden, Conn./Francis T. Maloney), who took a shot from 30 yards that took a deflection in the penalty area, only for it to go just wide of the far post as well.

Stonehill was then able to add an insurance goal in the 86th minute courtesy of Lindsay Gomes who scored from 12 yards out after a pass into the penalty area.

The win is the 4th in a row for the Skyhawks, who improved to 10-0-1 overall and 6-0-1 in NE-10 matches. The Falcons drop to 5-3-2 and 2-3-2 in the NE-10, but are still in the hunt for a playoff spot.

They will get back on the field on Saturday to host Franklin Pierce at noon.
