Assumption’s Villemaire Sends Bentley to Tough Loss in 2OT, 3-2

WALTHAM, Mass. – Assumption's Kallie Villemaire scored her second goal of the afternoon in the 104th minute to deal Bentley a tough 3-2 defeat in double overtime Wednesday afternoon in the Northeast-10 opener for the Falcons.

With Bentley trailing 2-1 in the second half, junior Ana Tantum (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) scored her third goal of the season in the 69th minute to draw Bentley level. She scored after dribbling around an Assumption defender and shooting from a tough angle to the near post.

In the first overtime, the Falcons had two good chances as shots by Tantum and freshman Christine Hoynack (Miami, Fla./Lourdes Academy) went just over the bar. Bentley goalkeeper Deirdre Macrorie (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) kept the score tied with a big save off a header by Assumption's Jaclyn Tomasello in the 99th minute.

Villemaire though won it for the Greyhounds after making a run down the left wing and slotting her shot just inside the far post.

The Falcons got off to the perfect start early on as Jenny Lewis fired in her third goal of the season in just the 2nd minute. Tantum had a shot blocked to get the goal started, and Lewis followed up the rebound with a close range effort to give the Falcons the early lead. Tantum was given an assist on the goal.

Bentley continued its strong start with shots on goal by Tantum and two by freshman Alyssa Valente (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) that challenged goalkeeper Emily Kuzma to make saves.

Assumption though eventually found its footing in the game and went ahead with two quick strike goals in the 30th minute from Jessica Fitzgerald and the 31st from Villemaire. Fitzgerald's goal came after a corner kick from Paige Radomski fell to her feet and allowed her a shot from 10 yards to the near post.

One minute later it was Villemaire scoring to give Assumption a 2-1 lead. The two goals broke a string of more than 320 minutes of scoreless defense by Bentley to start the season.

Early in the second half, Macrorie made a fine save on a shot by Fitzgerald to keep the deficit 2-1.

That saved proved large as Tantum equalized for Bentley in the 69th minute with her third goal of the season.

Bentley falls to 2-1-1 on the season, while the Greyhounds improve to 3-1. The team's next game is Saturday at home against Pace with an 11:00 am kickoff.
