WALTHAM, Mass. – 17th-ranked Merrimack improved to 8-0 on the season with a hard-fought 3-1 win over the Bentley University women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 action.
The Warriors go to 6-0 in the NE-10 and are one of just two teams in the league to have not dropped any points thus far. The Falcons fall to 3-3 in league play and 4-3 overall.
With the Falcons trailing 2-0 and 65 minutes gone, junior Laura Muise (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) got them back in the game with her first goal of the season. Junior Deirdre Leary (Holden, Mass./St. Peter Marian) helped create the goal with a run down the left wing and a centering pass to Muise, who fired her shot into the back of the net for the goal.
Junior Jenn Pino though secured the win for the Warriors with a 75th minute goal, collecting a loose ball in the box and scoring from close range.
Merrimack jumped out to a 2-0 advantage early in the first half on goals by sophomore Jenna Zechner, her fifth of the year, and freshman Katie Bresciani.
Zechner scored in the 16th minute after a through ball from Sarah Coakley sprung her loose and gave her an open shot from 10 yards out. Less than two minutes later Zechner had a hand in the second goal, sending a long ball over Bentley's defense to the foot of Bresciani and giving her a breakaway goal.
Bentley had a couple of chances to get closer after Pino's goal, notably Julie Pomponi's (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) curling shot in the 82nd minute that hit the far post.
The Falcons will now try to regroup as they embark on a five-game road swing, which begins on Tuesday afternoon with a non-conference match against Dowling.
