Falcons Cruise Past Dominican (N.Y.) 7-0 in Season-Opener

WALTHAM, Mass. - The women's soccer team got its season off to a strong start with a 7-0 victory over Dominican (N.Y.) Thursday afternoon at the Bentley University soccer field. Sophomores Sydney Spiegel (South Easton, Mass.) and Patty McAllister (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) each had a pair of goals and junior Julie Pomponi (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) had a goal and an assist.

The seven goals are the most scored by the program since a nine goal day against New York Tech in 1995. It's also their biggest margin of victory since then.

Bentley completed dominated play from start to finish, scoring four times in the first 26 minutes and twice in the first nine-plus minutes. They held the Lady Chargers to just three shots and possessed the ball in their half the majority of the game.

McAllister got the scoring started in the seventh minute on a shot from 15 yards out off a rebound from a saved shot by junior Deirdre Leary (Holden, Mass./St. Peter Marian).

Just over two minutes later Bentley made it 2-0 as Pomponi scored off a corner kick. Senior Amy Wagner (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) swung in the kick from the right side and Pomponi rose above the defense to head in the ball.

Spiegel pushed the home side's advantage to 3-0 with an unassisted goal in the 24th minute, and netted her second just two minutes.  Pomponi set the goal up, launching a high-arching long-ball from inside her own half over the top of Dominican's defense to the foot of Spiegel, who broke in on goal untouched.

Bentley netted two more just 1:29 apart in the second half to make the score 6-0. Sophomore Chelsea Owens (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) scored in the 53rd minute and junior Molly Alfieri (Southington, Conn./Southington) found the back of the net in the 54th minute.

McAllister finished the scoring the 85th minute off a corner kick from sophomore Casey Neary (Randolph, N.J./Randolph).

Freshman goalie Christina Hynds (West Roxbury, Mass./Boston Latin) earned the win in her first career start.

The Falcons are back in action on Tuesday at UMass-Lowell for their Northeast-10 opener.
