Saint Anselm Holds Off Bentley on Final Possession for 11-10 Win to Advance in NE10 Playoffs

WALTHAM, Mass. – No. 5 seed Saint Anselm held off No. 4 seed Bentley on the final possession of the game for an 11-10 victory to advance in the NE10 playoffs on Tuesday night.

Meeting in the NE10 Quarterfinals just six days after Bentley defeated the Hawks 14-10 in the regular season, it was another close game that this time the Hawks were able to win.

Bentley trailed 9-6 in the 4th quarter after Saint Anselm's Alison Ferullo scored at the 13:15 mark.

Just under three minutes later, Bentley's Courtney Dermody (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) scored to snap a 6-0 run by the Hawks.

Bentley's Caroline Affolter (Newburyport, Mass./Central Catholic) won the next draw control and they quickly advanced down the field, leading to a goal by Steph McAuliffe (Natick, Mass./Natick) at the 9:47 mark to make it a 9-8 game.

Affolter again won the next draw control and McAuliffe again quickly scored to tie the game 9-9, as the Falcons erased the three goal deficit in just over two minutes.

Saint Anselm won the next draw control and after failing to score on consecutive free position attempts, Maggie Fitzgerald scored at the 7:45 mark to give them back the lead.

The teams then traded possessions over the next several minutes and when St. A's got the ball back, Taylor Cobain scored at the 2:37 mark to give them an 11-9 lead.

McAuliffe won the next draw control and after the teams traded possessions, Bentley got the ball back and scored on a free-position by defender Kathryn Slattery (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) with 51 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 11-10.

Sydney Lynch (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) won the draw control for the Falcons who called timeout with 40 seconds remaining. Bentley though was unable to get a final shot off before the clock expired and the Hawks held on for the one goal victory.

Ashlee Wargo (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) made nine saves in the cage for Bentley. The leading goal scorer was Cobain for Saint Anselm with four, who advance to play the top seed Pace in the semifinals on Friday.
