No. 24 Stonehill Hangs on Late For 14-13 Victory over No. 14 Bentley
WALTHAM, Mass. – It came down to the final possession between two top-25 ranked teams in Bentley and Stonehill, but it was the Skyhawks that came up with a defensive stop on the game's final possession to hang on for a 14-13 victory over the Falcons on Saturday.
The Skyhawks took a 14-13 lead after Kayla Conway scored with 1:11 remaining. They won the ensuing draw control, but Bentley's Kat Slattery (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) caused a turnover and Caroline Affolter (Newburyport, Mass./Central Catholic) picked up the ground ball to give the Falcons possession and a timeout followed.
Bentley worked the ball downfield and Courtney Dermody (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) drew a foul and a free-position shot with 17 ticks left on the clock.
On the free-position shot Stonehill's defense collapsed and caused the shot to go wide, and Abigail Moynihan picked up the ground ball with 13 seconds left. Bentley forced a turnover on the clear but as they tried to regain possession time ran out and Stonehill won 14-13.
The game went into the 4th quarter tied 10-10 and the final quarter featured 3-0 runs by both teams. Stonehill scored three times inside the first two-plus minutes to take a 13-10 lead, with Emma Sullivan scoring the last two goals of the run.
But after the second of Sullivan's two straight with 12:21 left, Bentley kept them off the scoreboard until Conway's go-ahead goal in the final minute.
That defensive stand allowed Bentley to go on a 3-0 run of its own. Cara McCarthy (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) scored a man-up goal with 11:05 remaining, followed by a goal from Dermody at the 10:38 mark. Sydney Lynch (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) then scored to tie the game 13-13 with 6:18 to play.
Neither team would score for the next five minutes.
It was a tight game the entire way. The largest lead was just three goals, by Bentley at 7-4 midway through second quarter.
Four different players had two goals for Bentley, while Sullivan's five goals for Stonehill was the game-high. Lydia Rudden had a game-high seven points on one goal and six assists.
Bentley (3-2, 2-1 NE10) will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday night when they host Franklin Pierce.
