No. 7 Dowling Upends No. 8 Bentley 12-9

WALTHAM, Mass. – No. 8 Bentley University had its four game winning streak snapped by No. 7 Dowling Thursday night, 12-9 in a non-conference women's lacrosse matchup. Sophomore Jackie Andersen led the Golden Lions with four goals.

After a 3-0 run by Dowling that took just 3:28 gave them a 10-7 lead with 10:14 remaining in the second half, Bentley scored two goals in a row just 45 seconds apart to cut the deficit to 10-9 with 7:08 to play. However, Dowling scored the final two goals of the game to pull away.

Freshman Kelsey Howard (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) converted on a free-position shot to get the Falcons to within 10-8 at the 7:53 mark. Just 45 ticks later, classmate Erin O'Connor (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) was successful on another free-position attempt for Bentley to make it 10-9.

But Dowling took an 11-9 lead on a goal by senior attack Nicole Moran with 4:45 remaining, and Andersen scored a man-up goal with 2:48 to go to make the score 12-9.

The Falcons led most of the first half, leading by scores of 2-0, 4-3 and 5-4 at halftime after Howard scored the last goal of the half with 7:47 remaining. Sophomore Amy Ernst (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) led the scoring in the first half with two goals.

Dowling tied the game at 5-5 four minutes into the second half, but Bentley took the lead right back less than two minutes later on a goal by Megan Wiggins (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough), its last lead of the game. Dowling then scored two straight from junior Samantha Stavish and Moran to take a 7-6 lead.

But before Dowling embarked on its 3-0 run, junior Carolyn Kynoch (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) knotted the game at seven just past the midway point of the half, with Wiggins assisting on her goal.

The goals during Dowling's run came from Stavish, midfielder Kelly Cefalu and Andersen.

Bentley drops to 4-2 with the loss, while the Golden Lions improve to 6-1. Bentley is back in action on Saturday when they visit New Haven for a 1:00 pm start.
