No. 18 Bentley Remains Tied for 1st in NE10 with Wire-to-Wire Win

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Ten three-pointers, including four from sophomore guard Cassidy Yeomans (Marion, Mass./Tabor Academy), and a combined 29 points from the duo of senior forward Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) and freshman guard Niya Morgen (Swampscott, Mass./St. Mary's HS) led Bentley University to a wire-to-wire 72-48 win over St. Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball Wednesday evening at the Ross Sports Center.

Bentley, number 18 in this week's WBCA Division II coaches poll, improved to 12-2 overall (7-1 NE10) with its fourth win in an eight-day stretch. The Falcons remained tied for first in the conference, along with Southern New Hampshire, a 69-49 winner over American International.

Bentley took control of the game early as 11 unanswered points made it a 14-2 game with 4:31 to play in the opening stanza. Junior forward Kylie DuCharme (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington HS) scored the first four, Yeomans sank the first of her three first-half treys, and Whitmore had a pair of lay-ups.

It was a 20-10 lead at the end of the quarter with Whitmore's opening stanza including nine points, four rebounds and four-of-four from the field.

The Falcons added 21 points to their total in the second and went into the halftime break up 17, 41-24, after leading by as many as 21. Most of those second quarter points came via the long ball as the visitors made four, including two by Yeomans. There were also traditional three-point plays from freshman guard Morgen and sophomore forward Mikayla Cooper (Sunrise, Ariz./Valley Vista HS).

The difference stood at 20, 59-39, after three with Bentley shooting 57 percent in the quarter and making their eighth and ninth three-pointers of the game. There was an 8-0 run with all the scoring coming in the paint as well as three-balls from Yeomans and Whitmore.

Bentley's final run of the game came at the start of the fourth, nine unanswered points to go up 68-39. Seven of those were scored by Morgen, the two-time NE10 Rookie of the Week.

Morgen's 15-point effort off the bench saw her shoot five of ten overall, two of three from deep and three of five from the line. Whitmore missed only one of her seven shots and led the Falcons with seven rebounds. Yeomans didn't miss a shot, with all four of her baskets coming from outside the arc. Bentley also received nine from Wilmington and a career-best seven from Cooper.

The bench for St. Michael's (4-10, 0-8 NE10) outscored its starters, 27-21, with junior guard Molly Brophy (Greenwich, N.Y.) leading the way with a team-high 13. The Purple Knight starters made only 10 of 32 shots and failed to hit any of their six three-pointers.

Rebounds (34-34) and turnovers (9-9) were even, but Bentley's offensive superiority proved to be the difference. The conference's top three-point shooting team finished 10 of 17 from deep and shot .509 overall. Meanwhile, St. Michael's finished at .306 overall and just 2 of 18 from outside the arc.

Bentley will return home to host Franklin Pierce University Saturday at 1:30 pm.
