No. 16 Bentley Visits Adelphi Saturday in First of Two Straight on Road

WALTHAM, Mass. – After playing only two of its first six games on its home court, the Bentley University women's basketball team has two more road contests coming up, beginning Saturday afternoon at Adelphi University (NE10NOW.tv). The start time from the Center for Recreation and Sport was moved an hour earlier, from 1:30 pm to 12:30 pm.

Bentley, number 16 in the latest WBCA Division II coaches poll, is off to a 5-1 record in C White's fourth season at the helm. The Falcons are in a four-way tie for third in the Northeast-10, trailing a pair of 3-0 teams, unbeaten Pace University and Southern New Hampshire.

Adelphi has had a slow start with only one win in six games. Ironically, that came against the only team to defeat the Falcons, American International. The Panthers downed the Yellow Jackets 63-58 while the Falcons fell by two, 66-64.

Bentley bounced back from the lone blemish on the record to edge Saint Anselm College on Wednesday, 65-61. Graduate guard Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) scored 13 of her game-high 19 points in the second half, including the 1,000th of her career as she became the 38th Falcon to reach that milestone.

Thompson, currently 37th on the all-time list with 1,004, needs three points to surpass former Falcons Laurie Foley '85 and Monica Viapiano '20. She's averaging a career-high 15.3 and has scored either 18 or 19 in four of the six games. A 43 percent shooter from deep, Thompson's 16 three-pointers are four more than any other player in the conference.

Senior forward Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS), who missed the Saint Anselm game with an injury, follows with a 12.4 average. Freshman Niya Morgen (Swampscott/St. Mary's HS) has the NE10's third-best field goal percentage, .605, and is averaging 11.0 points.

Next on the scoring list are sophomore posts Ciara Norman (Roebling, N.J./Life Center Academy) and Julia Elie (Rockland/Rockland HS), at 9.0 and 6.5, respectively. Elie, in her last two games, has scored 12 and 11 points.

Adelphi, after falling to Pace by nine on Wednesday, will be looking to end a three-game slide. The Panthers have averaged only 48.5 points over the last two games and haven't scored 70 since the opener against Caldwell.

Six-one grad student Jenna Jordan had a double-double against Pace and leads the team in scoring (13.5), rebounds (8.8) and field goal percentage (.484). Junior guard Rolanda Robinson is the team's other double-figure scorer with 11.2 points per game.

Adelphi has had trouble putting the ball through the basket as they rank in the bottom three in the NE10 in each of the shooting categories. They are second in shot attempts and third in blocks.

The two programs split the season series last year and Bentley leads the all-time series, 14-9, with three straight wins on the road. The last five games in the series have been won by the visiting team.

The two games last year were decided by a total of six points with last year's 74-70 Falcon road win including four unanswered points by Whitmore in the final 45 seconds.

Bentley's final road game of 2023 will be Wednesday at Southern New Hampshire.
