Defensive-Minded Falcons Finish Regular Season Tuesday vs. AIC

WALTHAM, Mass. – After giving up a total of 75 points in two wins last week, the Bentley University women's basketball team will close out the regular season Tuesday night on Barbara Stevens Court against American International College. The 5:30 pm game will be streamed over the NE10 NOW digital network for those not in attendance.

Saturday's 70-43 victory at Franklin Pierce gave Bentley records of 16-9 overall and 13-6 Northeast-10. The Falcons are in fourth place in the conference and will likely be looking at a first-round playoff game at home on Friday, unless the Falcons win and third-place Southern New Hampshire loses to St. Michael's.

AIC, in a three-way tie for fifth, owns records of 15-12 overall and 11-8 NE10. The Yellow Jackets halted a four-game slide on Saturday with a 53-42 win over Southern Connecticut State.

In its last 15 games, the Falcons have held ten opponents to less than 50 points and have given up as many as 70 only twice. That's boosted coach C White's team to fifth nationally in Division II in scoring defense with an average of 53.7. In defending the three, the Falcons are third in Division II in both opponents three-point accuracy (.247) and fewest triples allowed per game (3.6).

On the other side of the ball, Bentley is also one of the most accurate teams at shooting the three, ranking 13th nationally with a conference-leading .363. The Falcons have three of the NE10's top eight with freshman guard Cassidy Yeomans (Marion/Tabor Academy) leading the conference at .446, graduate guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North HS) third at .413  and senior guard Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) up to eighth (.380) after making 10 of 14 in the last two games.

Junior forward Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS), the team's leading scorer, shoots 46 percent from deep but hasn't made enough to qualify for the rankings. He averages 12.6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists and has an outstanding .939 free throw percentage, by far the NE10's best.

Thompson, who had a season-high 19 at Franklin Pierce, has boosted her season norm to 10.8 after averaging 13.5 points in her last five games.

Bentley's starting five against Franklin Pierce also included sophomore guard Amanda Kabantu (Portland, Maine/Portland HS) and two freshmen, Yeomans and post Ciara Norman (Roebling, N.J./Life Center Academy). In addition to averaging 7.3 points, Norman is Bentley's second best rebounder at 5.4 a game.

AIC has two of the conference's top ten scorers, graduate forward Taylor Tomlinson and senior guard Kayla Robinson. Tomlinson, a transfer from Dominican, averages 16.1 points and 6.1 rebounds. Robinson follows at 14.4 and has been the Yellow Jackets' top scorer in five of the last eight games.

AIC, which has put up more than 60 points only once in the last eight games, is tenth in the conference in scoring and seventh in scoring defense. No one in the NE10 comes up with more steals (10.6) or forces more turnovers (18.9). Robinson and Julia Carbonell Munoz are 1-2 in the NE10 with 64 and 58 steals, respectively.

The two teams met back in the first week of January with Bentley prevailing 64-42 on the strength of a 16-point, nine-rebound, five-assist performance by Thompson. The Falcons were a plus-17 on the boards and limited the Jackets to a .275 field goal percentage, including only one of 13 from deep.

Bentley leads the all-time series 69-11 and has won nine in a row against AIC.
