Thompson & Whitmore Lead Bentley to 67-32 Win over Saint Rose

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior guard Ella Thompson (Greenville, Ind./Center Grove HS) sank five threes for 15 points and junior forward Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) added 14 as Bentley University put the clamps on The College of Saint Rose for a 67-32 victory in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball Wednesday night on Barbara Stevens Court.

Bentley, which kept an opponent to less than 50 points for the tenth time this season, improved to 15-9 overall and 12-6 NE10 with the convincing win. Saint Rose, whose .224 field goal percentage was a season-low for a Falcon opponent, fell to 9-14 overall and 6-12 conference.

The Falcons, in front 20-13 just past the midpoint of the second quarter, broke the game open by closing out the half with ten unanswered points. Sophomore guard Amanda Kabantu (Portland, Maine/Portland HS) started it with a driving lay-up, Thompson closed the spurt with a corner three and in between, Bentley made five of six free throws.

The run grew to 16-0 as the Falcons scored the first six after play resumed, two lay-ups by Whitmore and one by Kabantu. That made it a 36-13 game with just under eight minutes remaining in the third.

After the Golden Knights scored nine straight points spanning the third and fourth quarters to draw within 18, Bentley closed it out with a 21-4 run over the game's final six minutes. That included three triples by Thompson in a stretch of 70 seconds.

Thompson, who came off the bench for only the second time this season, and Whitmore were joined in double figures by freshman guard Cassidy Yeomans (Marion/Tabor Academy) and Kabantu. Yeomans, a plus-33 in her first career start, established career-bests with 12 points and six assists while Kabantu's night included ten points, eight rebounds and three steals.

Bentley shot 40 percent and was eight of 21 from downtown. The Falcons won the rebounding game, 44-27, and had a 23-10 advantage in points off turnovers, 23-10. Led by Thompson, Coach C White's non-starters scored only one less point than Saint Rose did as a team.

The penultimate game of the regular season is Saturday at Franklin Pierce (1:30) and the final home game will be Tuesday at home against American International.
