Pace Stuns Bentley, 49-48, for First Win in Waltham Since 2001

WALTHAM, Mass. – Down four with three minutes to play, Pace University scored eight of the game's final 11 points to edge Bentley University, 49-48, in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball Saturday afternoon on Barbara Stevens Court. It was the Setters' first victory in the Dana Center since the 2001 NCAA Division II East Regional championship game.

Bentley, which has now lost four home games this season by a total of seven points, dropped to 14-9 overall and 11-6 NE10.

Following two free throws from senior guard Ella Thompson (Greenville, Ind./Center Grove HS), Bentley was in front 45-41 with 5:24 left on the clock.  However, it would be close to five minutes before the Falcons would score again, and by that point, they would be down a deuce, 47-45. Baskets by freshman forward Ciara Collins (Bristol, Conn.), junior guard Shanice Sinclair (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and graduate guard Lauren Hackett (Commack, N.Y.) helped the visitors overtake the Falcons.

Bentley ended its scoring drought and got one point closer with 34.1 to play when sophomore guard Amanda Kamandu (Portland, Maine/Portland HS) made the second of two free throws. Hackett did her one better with 31.2 on the clock, making two from the stripe to extend the lead to three, 49-46.

A lay-up from freshman post Ciara Norman (Roebling, N.J./Life Center Academy), off a nice pass from junior forward Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS), brought Bentley to within one with 7.7 left.

After a Setter turnover and Falcon time, Bentley had a final possession. However, the inbound pass with five seconds on the clock was stolen by sophomore forward Arianna Stockinger (Plano, Texas), ending the Falcons' hopes.

Bentley led 14-7 after the opening quarter, due in large part to a 12-0 over the final six minutes. The Falcon advantage peaked at nine about 30 seconds later but was down to two by the half, 26-24.

The Falcons shot only 26 percent in the second half and managed only ten fourth quarter points on 2-of-9 shooting.

Kabantu was the only one of the ten Bentley players who scored to reach double figures and she finished with ten points, most coming from the line where she was 7-of-11. Norman scored seven points and freshman post Bri Gillen (Lakeville/Bishop Feehan HS) followed with six off the bench.

Hackett led Pace with 11 points, five assists and three steals.

Bentley had the advantage in three-pointers (6-2) and free throws (12-7), but Pace shot slightly better (38-33 percent) and committed seven fewer turnovers.

The Falcons will look to bounce back Wednesday at home against Saint Rose.
