Bentley Visits Adelphi Tuesday, Looking to Even Season Series

WALTHAM, Mass. – After holding an opponent to less than 50 points for the eighth time this season, the Bentley University women's basketball team will be on Long Island Tuesday looking to even the season series with Adelphi University. Game time at the Center for Sport and Recreation in Garden City is 5:30 pm and the game can be viewed over the NE10 NOW Digital Network.

Coach C White's Falcons are 13-8 overall and 10-5 Northeast-10 after snapping a four-game slide with an impressive 60-48 win over Southern New Hampshire University last Wednesday. It was Bentley's second win of the season over the 15-5 Penmen.

Adelphi, 2-5 in its last seven games, has slid into a tie for tenth in the Northeast-10 with four regular season games remaining. The Panthers are 9-12 overall, 6-10 NE10 and 5-6 at home.

When the two squads met at Bentley's Dana Center back in December, Adelphi made three of four free throws in the final 3.7 seconds to prevail 59-57 and hand the Falcons the first of three two-point losses they've incurred this season. There were 13 lead changes and five ties in the closely contested contest that saw the visitors score 17 points off turnovers. Six-one senior Jenna Jordan powered Adelphi with 20 points and junior forward Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) had 15 for Bentley.

Whitmore combined with freshman post Ciara Norman (Roebling, N.J./Life Center Academy), the NE10 Rookie of the Week for the second time, to lead Bentley to the win over Southern New Hampshire in the team's only game last week. Whitmore scored 21 points, Norman added 19 points and 14 rebounds off the bench, and the duo were a combined 17 of 24 from the floor.

That win helped to tighten the standings in the Northeast-10 with the regular season schedule down to the final quarter. Only two-and-a-half games separate the top six with Bentley currently tied for fourth, two back of Assumption and a game-and-a-half back of Le Moyne. Those top two teams will meet up Tuesday out in Syracuse.

Whitmore, who leads the team in most statistical categories, has raised her scoring average to 12.8 after producing 21 a game over the last three. She's made at least half her shot attempts in six of the last seven games, is shooting 49 percent from three, has made 30 consecutive free throws and has collected at least six rebounds in five of the last six.

Whitmore is followed on the scoring list by senior guard Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) and graduate guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North HS) with scoring averages of 10.1 and 9.3 respectively. Both are threats from deep with Brekke having 38 treys and Thompson 26.

Norman, who averages 7.0 points and 5.2 rebounds while playing 14 minutes a game, is second in the conference in rebounds per 40 minutes and fifth in points per 40.

In conference games, Bentley leads the NE10 in three-point accuracy and opponent three-point percentage, and is second in scoring defense and opponent field goal percentage.

While defense has been a strength of White's team, Adelphi is the NE10 leader in conference play in scoring  (65.1) and three-pointers (6.8).

Adelphi features two of the conference's top scorer, including graduate guard Ty'shea Hawkins who tops the list at 17.9 per game. She produced 23 a game in six November games but has only averaged 14.8 the last two weeks. Jordan has elevated her norm to 15.4 after scoring at a rate of 22 a game during that same time frame.

Bentley is 14-8 all-time against Adelphi after capturing four of the last five meetings.

After Adelphi, Bentley will play two in a row in the Dana Center, Saturday with a Senior Day game against Pace and Feb. 15 against Saint Rose.
