Bentley Opens February With Home Encounter against Southern New Hampshire

WALTHAM, Mass. – It will be the Northeast-10's number two team in scoring defense against the conference's highest scoring team when the Bentley University women's basketball team hosts Southern New Hampshire University Wednesday on Barbara Stevens Court. The 5:30 pm game will be streamed over the NE10 NOW digital network.

Bentley limits its opponents to 55.1 points a game, including 50.9 in conference action, while Southern New Hampshire puts up an average of 66.6.

The Falcons, who won at Southern New Hampshire back in November, will be looking to end a four-game slide that includes two-point losses in each of the last two home games. Coach C White's club, 12-8 overall and 9-5 NE10, has slid from a first-place tie to fifth place following the recent difficulties.

Southern New Hampshire comes into the Dana Center in second place, 10-3 conference and 14-4 overall. The Penmen are 2-2 in their last four after a ten-game winning streak from November 30 to January 10.

Bentley junior forward Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) had her most productive week as a collegian last week with a career-high 26 points against Saint Anselm last Wednesday and 16 at Southern Connecticut State Saturday. Over the last three games, she's made 21 of 36 shots and extended her free throw streak to 25.

For the season, Whitmore is averaging 12.2 points and 6.9 rebounds while also topping the Falcons in assists, steals and blocks.

Guards Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) and Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North HS), a duo who have combined for half of the team's three-pointers, follow with averages of 10.1 and 9.3 respectively.

Off the bench, Bentley freshman posts Julia Elie (Rockland/Rockland HS) and Ciara Norman (Roebling, N.J./Life Center Academy) have demonstrated their potential this season. Norman averages 6.4 points and 4.8 rebounds and Elie follows at 5.2 and 2.7. Both have been a factor on the offensive boards with 35 and 28, respectively.

Southern New Hampshire features senior guard Adriana Timberlake, the conference's number two scorer at 17.6 per game, and six-two junior Jess Knight, one of three NE10 players averaging a double-double (15.8 points, 10.3 rebounds).

Timberlake led the Penmen in scoring in eight straight games before senior forward Ariana Koivisto scored 18 in Saturday's 77-74 win against Pace.

The Owls have enjoyed playing on the opponents' home court this season with seven wins in eight games, the only loss coming at Le Moyne a couple weeks ago.

When these two teams met back on November 22, Bentley overcame a 17-6 deficit after one quarter to prevail 63-51. The Falcons dominated in the middle two quarters, outscoring the Penmen 47-25. Brekke led all scorers with 19 points, Whitmore collected 11 rebounds and Knight, with 14 points, was the only SNHU player to score more than eight.

The all-time series is led by Bentley, 46-8, although its been close the last five years with the Falcons holding a 5-4 edge.

After taking on Southern New Hampshire, Bentley will be off until a Tuesday road game against Adelphi University.
