Buzzer-Beating Putback Lifts New Haven Past Bentley, 51-49

WALTHAM, Mass. – Two offensive rebounds in the final three seconds and a buzzer-beating putback with three-tenths of a second remaining by senior forward Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y.) gave the University of New Haven a stunning 51-49 win over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball Wednesday night at the Dana Center.

Bentley, which had won six in a row, lost its hold on sole possession of first-place in the conference and moved into a three-way tie for the top spot with Assumption University and Southern New Hampshire. The Falcons slipped to 12-5 overall and 9-2 NE10 while New Haven improved to 8-7 (5-6 NE10).

The low-scoring closely-played game saw Bentley go up three, 44-41, with 5:47 left following a lay-up from freshman post Julia Elie (Rockland/Rockland HS) and a three-point play from sophomore Kylie DuCharme (Wilmington/Wilmington HS). New Haven responded by scoring the next six points, including a foul line jumper from senior guard Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn.) that put the Chargers back up three with 3:58 left.

A three from the left wing by Bentley captain and graduate guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North HS) with 3:27 to play evened the game at 47 and it remained that way for more than two minutes. King returned the lead to her team as she beat the shot clock with a lay-up with 1:14 remaining.

After a Bentley possession was kept alive by an offensive rebound by junior forward Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS), freshman forward and reigning NE10 Rookie of the Week hit a turn-around jumper in the lane with 42.2 on the clock, creating the game's eighth tie.

Following a Bentley foul late in the shot clock, New Haven got a chance to set up the game's final shot with 13 seconds left. Deshaies rebounded missed by both graduate guard Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla.) and herself before getting the game-winner to fall.

There was very little offense throughout the contest with New Haven leading 11-7 after one, Bentley up 25-23 at the half and the Chargers back in front 36-33 after three following a corner triple with :03 to play.

The fourth quarter included seven lead changes before Deshaies' game-winner.

DeBose led all scorers with 16 points and Deshaies followed with ten points and nine rebounds.

No one scored in doubles for Bentley with Elie leading the team with eight and both Norman and Whitmore netting seven. Norman also led Bentley in rebounds with eight.

Bentley's bench, which included Norman and Elie, accounted for 31 of the Falcons' 49 points. Bentley, outrebounded 38-30, shot only 33 percent and made only five of 17 three-pointers.

New Haven finished with a .420 field goal percentage, which offset the team's 20 turnovers (10 more than the Falcons).

Bentley will look to bounce back Saturday with a 1 pm game at Le Moyne College.
