Bentley Shuts Down St. Michael’s for 6th Straight Win

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Junior forward Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) had an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double and the Falcons gave up only 12 points over the final three quarters as Bentley University contained St. Michael's College, 52-27, in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball Saturday afternoon at the Ross Sports Center.

Bentley, with its sixth consecutive win, improved to 12-4 overall, including 9-1 conference, and took over sole possession of first place in the Northeast-10. The 27 points allowed was the Falcons' best since February 2013.

Coach C White's team took charge of the game in the third quarter when it outscored the Purple Knights 19-3. Nine different Falcons scored in the stanza while St. Michael's (1-13, 0-10 NE10) had just one field goal and seven turnovers.

The third included a 16-0 Falcon run that began with a three-ball from the left wing by sophomore guard Brooke Obar (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely HS). Junior guard Janessa Gonzalez (Meriden, Conn./St. Paul Catholic HS) had six of the 16 with a mid-range jumper and four free throws.

The final 25-point spread marked the highest differential of the afternoon.

Neither team had trouble scoring in the opening quarter which ended with Bentley up one, 16-15, following four lead changes. Bentley made half of its 14 shot attempts and St. Michael's was six of 14 from the field.

Points were at a premium both ways in the second with only 11 combined. Bentley scored seven and went into the half up four, 23-19.

Whitmore, five of eight from the floor, was the only player in the game to score in double figures. All ten of her rebounds came at the defensive end and she also had two steals and an assist.

The Bentley came up big for Bentley, with 22 rebounds in addition to 27 points. Freshman post Ciara Norman (Roebling, N.J./Life Center Academy) had seven points, eight rebounds and two steals, and Gonzalez followed with six points and four takeaways. Obar added five points and two steals.

The top scorer for St. Michael's was junior forward Makayla Blake (Colonie, N.Y.) with nine rebounds.

Bentley, which limited the Purple Knights to 22.7 percent shooting and only two three-pointers in 11 attempts, had a plus-ten rebound margin, 42-32, and 13 steals. Second chance points were 11-0 Falcons, points off turnovers were 25-7 and unlike Bentley's non-starters, the St. Michael's reserves did not score.

The next game for Bentley is at home on Wednesday against New Haven.
