Bentley Hosts No. 18 Assumption in Battle for 1st Place

WALTHAM, Mass. – Three teams began this week tied for first place in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball and two of those, Bentley University and Assumption University, will meet up Wednesday night when the Falcons host the Greyhounds at the Dana Center.

Game time on Barbara Stevens Court is set for 5:30 pm and it will be streamed over the NE10NOW Digital Network (www.NE10NOW.tv/bentleyfalcons).

Bentley and Assumption are both 7-1 in conference play and Southern New Hampshire took the same record into Tuesday night's game against New Haven.

Coach C White's Falcons, who have played 11 of their first 14 games away from Waltham, return to the Dana Center with a 10-4 overall record and a four-game winning streak. During that stretch, the Falcons have limited Molloy, Franklin Pierce, Saint Rose and American International to an average of 44.8 points with a winning margin of 27.8 points.

Assumption, which has already bettered last year's win total, is off to a 13-1 start with the only loss coming Dec. 31 at Southern New Hampshire, 58-49. Since then, the Hounds have earned wins at Saint Anselm (65-57) and against Southern Connecticut State (62-51).

Bentley is coming off a 64-42 win Saturday at AIC, a game in which the Falcons limited the Yellow Jackets to 27.5 percent shooting and only one three-pointer in 13 attempts. Senior guard Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) led the team in scoring for the second straight game, finishing with 16 points, as well as nine rebounds and five assists.

Thompson, with a 10.8 scoring average, is one of the top three scorers for the Falcons this season. Junior guard Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) has returned to the top of the list at 11.4 points per game and graduate guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North HS) follows at 11.0. Brekke leads the conference in three-point accuracy (.479) and is second to Assumption's Molly Stokes in number of treys made, with 34.

The next two on Bentley's scoring list are sophomore guard Amanda Kabantu (Portland, Maine/Portland HS), at 6.6 a game, and freshman post Ciara Norman (Roebling, N.J./Life Center Academy), at 5.5 off the bench.

Assumption will come into the Dana Center ranked third in Division II in scoring defense (50.1) and fourth in field goal percentage defense (.329). Coach Kelly Phayre's team, which has won its games by an average of 18 points, has allowed only one team to score  as many as 60 points, Queens, and that was in an 81-76 triple-OT win.

Junior guard Molly Stokes is having a strong season for the Hounds. She shoots 41 percent from downtown and is averaging 13.4 points. Sophomore guard Marina Callahan follows her on the scoring list with a 10.6 average.

Bentley and Assumption have met 88 times previously with the Falcons having a 77-11 record in the series. The two teams split last year with each protecting their home court, Bentley 79-70 and Assumption 68-62. Thompson scored a career-best 25 in the win and the Assumption victory ended the Falcons' ten-game winning streak in the series.

After facing Assumption, Bentley will travel to Vermont for a Saturday encounter with St. Michael's College.
