Bentley Returns to the Road for Saturday Matinee at Holy Family

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley University women's basketball team, which has played only twice on Barbara Stevens Court this season, will be back on the road this weekend for a non-conference Saturday matinee against Holy Family University in Philadelphia. Game time at the Campus Center is 1 pm and the contest will be available to watch on the CACC Digital Network (https://caccnetwork.com/holyfamily/).

Bentley, which has already visited New Jersey, Florida, New Hampshire and New York this year, will be looking to bounce back from last Saturday's 57-55 loss to Adelphi University, a game that included 13 lead changes. That left Coach C White's squad at 6-3 overall and 4-1 Northeast-10.

Holy Family, which has gone to OT three times already this season, is 6-5 overall and 2-1 at home. The Tigers have won three of their last four, including a 61-37 shutdown of East Stroudsburg last Saturday.

Bentley's top scorer could be anyone on any given day. Six different players have earned the honor already this season and only graduate guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North HS) has done it more than twice.

Brekke, who has had at least a share of the team scoring high four times, netted her 1,000th point as a collegian in Saturday's game on a left corner three. She averages 11.1 points and is among the conference's best in three-point accuracy at .432.

Six-foot junior Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) had a strong overall game against Adelphi with her 15 points, on 7-of-12 shooting, a season-high. She also led the team with nine rebounds and five assists. For the season, Whitmore is averaging 10.4 points, a team-best 7.4 rebounds, two assists and 1.3 steals.

Rounding out the usual starting five are senior guard Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS), sophomore guard Amanda Kabantu (Portland, Maine/Portland HS) and six-two senior Bri Gillen (Lakeville/Bishop Feehan HS). Thompson averages 10 points and Kabantu follows at 6.5.

Off the bench, Bentley's top scorers have been freshman posts Julia Elie (Rockland/Rockland HS) and Ciara Norman (Roebling, N.J./Life Center Academy), with scoring norms of 6.0 and 5.6, respectively.

Bentley's defense ranks in the top four in the conference with the Falcons giving up 58.3 points a game and limiting the opponents to a .373 field goal percentage and a .255 accuracy rate from three.

Holy Family freshman guard Skylar Searfoss is off to a strong start to her collegiate career. She's averaging 13 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.1 steals while shooting .465 overall and .811 from the line.

Another Tiger to watch is six-one junior Carolyn Prevost. Her 10.0 scoring average is up significantly from last season's 6.4, and she had a 25-point game late last month at Georgian Court.

Bentley leads the all-time series against Holy Family, 12-2, after winning the last ten meetings. The most recent encounter came in December 2019 with the Falcons prevailing at home, 74-52. Brekke sank three triples in that one and finished with 16 points, a total matched by Monica Viapiano.

Following a holiday break, Bentley will return to action Dec. 29 at Molloy College (2 pm). The next home game is New Year's Day against Franklin Pierce (1:30 pm).
