No. 22 Bentley Back on the Road Tuesday at Pace

WALTHAM, Mass. – After burying ten three-pointers in a 65-55 win over Southern Connecticut Saturday in its home opener, the Bentley University women's basketball team will be back on the road Tuesday for a 5:30 pm game at Pace University. The game from the Goldstein Athletics Center can be viewed on NE10NOW.tv.

Coach C White's Falcons return to the road with records of 5-2 overall and 3-0 Northeast-10. The Falcons, who were 22nd in last week's WBCA Division II coaches poll, share first place in the conference with undefeated Assumption University.

Pace, the defending NCAA Division II East Region champions, have dropped five in a row to fall to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the NE10. The only win for the Setters came at Roberts Wesleyan, 70-55, back on Nov. 12.

After struggling from deep to start the season, Bentley has had the hot hand of late, making 17 of 33 over the last game-and-a-half. In Saturday's win over the Owls, six Falcons connected from three-point range with freshman guard Cassidy Yeomans (Marion/Tabor Academy) and sophomore guard Amanda Kabantu (Portland, Maine/Portland HS) both two-for-two, and junior guard Janessa Gonzalez (Meriden, Conn./St. Paul Catholic HS) two-for-three. Yeomans leads the conference from downtown at .643 and graduate guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North HS) is seventh (.412 with 14 made).

The scoring has been spread around with Brekke, senior guard Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS), Brekke and junior Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) all averaging in double figures. Brekke, 11 points shy of 1,000 as a collegian, tops the list at 11.6, and Thompson, who had a game-high 12 against Southern, follows at 11.0.

Whitmore, in addition to scoring 10.4 a game, leads Bentley in rebounds (7.4), assists (23) steals (12) and free throw shooting (14/16, .875).

Bentley, in its five wins, has limited its opponents to 51.6 points a game and a .332 field goal percentage. That contrasts to the 83 points and .492 field goal percentage the Falcons allowed in their two losses.

Offense has been an issue for Pace so far this season with the Setters in the bottom two of the Northeast-10 in scoring, field goal percentage and three-point accuracy. On Saturday, Pace had one of its best offensive games of the season but gave up a season-high points in a 77-66 loss to Southern New Hampshire.

Coach Carrie Seymour has three starters back from last year's regional championship team but lost standout post Lauren Schletter who basically led the team in everything, including points, rebounds, blocks and steals.

Graduate student and guard Lauren Hackett is Pace's top scorer this season, averaging 10.4 points as well as four assists and 2.1 steals a game.  Sophomore six-footer Tower Lorde follows with averages of 8.8 points and five rebounds.

Bentley is 32-7 all-time against Pace with a ten-game winning streak in the series. Last year's score, in a game played in Waltham, was 75-55.

Bentley's next home game is Saturday against Adelphi University. Before tipoff, at about 1:15 pm, retired Bentley head coach Barbara Stevens will be recognized for her 2021 induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
