Following 2-0 Weekend, No. 13 Bentley Launches NE10 Schedule Wednesday at Saint Anselm

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University's string of six straight games away from home to open the 2022-23 women's basketball season will continue Wednesday when the Falcons take their 2-0 record and number 13 preseason ranking to Saint Anselm College for the Northeast-10 Conference opener.

Tip-off at Stoutenburgh Gym is set for 5:30 pm and the game will be streamed at NE10NOW.tv.

Coach C White's team opened the schedule this past weekend by defeating Bloomfield College at Caldwell University and downing Caldwell at Bloomfield. In the two games, the Falcons gave up an average of 50 points per game, had a +10.5 rebound margin and limited the two teams to a .328 field goal percentage, including only 6 of 21 from deep.

Junior guard Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) had a strong weekend as she averaged 12.5 points, nine rebounds, 3.5 assists and three steals. In addition, she shot .526 overall and made a couple three-pointers.

Next on the scoring list are All-Conference guards Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) and Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North HS), who produced 10.5 and 9.0 points a game, respectively.

Six-two senior Bri Gillen (Lakeville/Bishop Feehan HS) averaged 8.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in her first game action since March 1, 2020. The Falcons also received contributions around the basket from freshmen Ciara Norman (Roebling, N.J./Life Center Academy) and Julia Elie (Rockland/Rockland HS). Norman totaled 14 points in her first two collegiate games and Elie was a force on the offensive glass with 12, including nine against Bloomfield.

Saint Anselm split two home games during the opening weekend with the Hawks rebounding from a one-point loss to Southern New Hampshire to defeat Dominican College (N.Y.), 87-60.

Leading the Hawks was junior guard Gabby Turbo, who scored 27 against SNHU and 21 in the Dominican game. She also averaged 7.5 rebounds and shot 63 percent overall, including four of seven from three-point land.

Senior forward Liv Robles also had a solid weekend as she averaged 13.5 points and six rebounds.

Saint Anselm was outstanding shooting the three-ball as they made 61 percent from downtown, including 4-of-4 from Robles and 4-of-5  from freshman guard Gina Gaccione.

Bentley, the defending NE10 tournament champion, swept the Hawks last year, winning 67-60 in Manchester, N.H. and 73-62 at home.  Brekke scored 18 in the first meeting and Autumn Ceppi, now a graduate assistant coach, has 26, in the rematch. Since-graduate Peyton Steinman led the Hawks in the two games with 25 and 32 points.

Bentley's next game will also be in the Queen City, next Tuesday at Southern New Hampshire.
