Battle for 1st Saturday When Bentley Women’s Basketball Hosts SNHU

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley University women's basketball team can take a big step towards capturing the Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division when it host Southern New Hampshire in its annual Pink Day game Saturday afternoon at 1:30 pm. As always, the game will be streamed on the NE10 NOW digital network.

Bentley, following Thursday's wire-to-wire win over St. Michael's, leads the division by one game over SNHU and could extend its advantage to two with a win. The Falcons have won six of their last seven to improve to 13-5 overall and 11-3 conference.

Southern New Hampshire are coming off a 62-50 win over New Haven and are currently  16-5 overall and 10-4 NE10. While Bentley is an overtime loss away from a seven-game winning streak, the Penmen are an overtime loss away from having a five-game streak.

In the earlier meeting between the two teams, on Dec. 7, Southern New Hampshire pulled away with a 29-point second quarter and went on to post a 65-53 victory. The Falcons, who received 17 points from junior guard Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS), shot just .317 overall and were only 3 of 21 from deep.

In contrast to that night, Bentley leads the Northeast-10 in field goal percentage (.440) as well as scoring (72.5). Defensively, C White's team has allowed more than 57 points only once in the last eight games and that one went to OT.

Thompson and graduate forward Autumn Ceppi (Bedford/Dana Hall School), who had her second 20-point game of the season Thursday against St. Michael's, are Bentley's top two scorers. Thompson averages 13.4 and Ceppi is right behind her at 13.1.

White has been starting from each class with Ceppi and Thompson joined by senior guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North HS), sophomore guard Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) and freshman guard Amanda Kabantu (Portland, Maine/ Portland HS).

Brekke averages 10.1, Whitmore 8.3 and Kabantu 7.7. Whitmore is second on the team in rebounds and Kabantu has scored 12.8 points over the last six games.

Southern New Hampshire comes in as the conference's highest scoring team at 72.5. Only three times have they scored less than 60 (in losses to Assumption, Adelphi and Pace), and they are tremendous at the foul line (.779).

Four players average in doubles with graduate guard Gyanna Russell at the top of the list at 13.7. Graduate forward Meg Knollmeyer is the NE10's premier rebounder, pulling in 12.8 a game in addition to scoring at a rate of 13.5. She's also number one in the conference in blocks (37) and second in steals (42), averaging four "stocks" per game.

Bentley leads the all-time series 45-7 and had won four in a row before the December loss.

Three games are on tap for the Falcons next week, beginning with a home game against New Haven on Monday.
