Bentley Women Remain on Road to Take on Assumption Wednesday

WALTHAM, Mass. – In the midst of their second stretch this season of four straight games away from campus, the Bentley University women's basketball team will be in Laska Gym in Worcester Wednesday evening to take on Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference action. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm and the game can be viewed on the NE10 NOW digital network.

Following an impressive 64-51 win over previously-unbeaten St. Thomas Aquinas on Sunday, Bentley owns records of 5-3 overall and 1-0 NE10. They'll be facing an Assumption team that is 4-3 overall and 2-1 conference.

The two teams have played three common opponents thus far this season. Both have suffered losses to USciences and Molloy, but had significantly different results against Stonehill. The Falcons handled the Skyhawks, 69-53, in their conference opener while Assumption is coming off a post-Thanksgiving 63-51 loss at home.

Six different Falcons have earned game-high scoring honors for Bentley already this season, including senior forward Megan Lewis (Sevenoaks, England) and senior center Monica Viapiano (Holden/Holy Name HS) who both had 15 points in the win over STAC.

Viapiano leads Bentley in scoring at 14.5 a game, as well as rebounding (6.6), blocks (7) and field goal percentage (.581). She's also extended her range this season, making five of ten three-balls after attempting only five during her first three seasons.

Sophomore guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wisc./Appleton North HS) follows at 10.9 per game and junior guard Katie Meriggioli (Waunakee, Wisc./Edgewood HS) is only a tenth-of-a-point shy of a 10-point average.

Assumption is led by senior guard Brianna Capacchione and freshman forward Monica Spain. Capacchione, who has a pair of 20-point games, is averaging 12.9 points and Spain follows at 11.4. Junior forward Terri Falayi and Spain are both factors on the offensive boards, with 25 and 20, respectively.

The Greyhounds are sixth in the NE10 in scoring defense (57.1), tenth in scoring offense (60.9) and 13th in both field goal percentage (.374) and three-point accuracy (.231).

Bentley has a six-game winning streak in the series with last year's scores 83-71 and 57-51.

Coach Barbara Stevens and her Falcons will be on the road Saturday at Franklin Pierce.

After that one, they'll play three in a row at home, beginning Dec. 15 against Holy Family.
