Following Trips to Philly and Florida, Bentley Set for Saturday’s Home Opener

WALTHAM, Mass. – Four games into the new season, the Bentley University women's basketball team has yet to play on Barbara Stevens Court.

That will change on Saturday when Stevens and her team take on visiting Queens College (N.Y.) in a 12:30 pm non-conference contest.

The Falcons, 2-2, will also host Stonehill College Tuesday in its Northeast-10 opener returning to the road for three games. That stretch will include Thanksgiving weekend games in New York against Molloy College and Saint Thomas Aquinas College.

Bentley gained splits on its first two trips. In Philadelphia to open the season, the Falcons bounced back from an opening loss to nationally-ranked USciences to defeat Goldey-Beacom. This past weekend down in Florida, they pulled out a 65-62 win at Florida Southern before falling to reigning NCAA Division II South Regional champion Nova Southeastern.

It was a tough opening schedule as the four teams were a combined 95-35 last season.

At the top of the Bentley scoring list are sophomore guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wisc./ Appleton North HS) and senior center Monica Viapiano (Holden/Holy Name HS). Brekke produces 12.5 points a game, two-tenths more than Viapiano's average.

Brekke, last year's America East Rookie of the Year, leads the team in playing time and has shot well from deep, hitting seven of 15 three-pointers. Viapiano, limited to 19.8 minutes a game by foul trouble, has been effective when she's been on the court, shooting at a 58 percent success rate.

Senior guard Maddy Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant HS), whose three-pointer with about five seconds left at Florida Southern was the game-winner, had a career-high 23 points against the Mocs and is averaging 9.3 points.

Graduate guard Megan Lewis (Sevenoaks, England) leads the Falcons in assists (17) and junior guard Katie Meriggioli (Waunakee, Wisc./Edgewood HS) is first in rebounding at 6.3 a game. Neither has scored like they did last year up to this point with both averaging about four points less.

Queens will come into the Dana Center looking to halt a four-game losing streak, the most recent coming on Wednesday to Southern New Hampshire (59-48). The Knights had an impressive opener, knocking off Jefferson University, 63-58.

Junior guard/forward Zorria West leads three double-digit scorers for Queens at 13 a game. She has a slight lead over freshman forward Raiana Brown, who is at 12.8.  Both are the team's top rebounders with Brown at 8.8 and West 7.2.

The Knights, who score 56.4 points a game, also receive 11.2 points a game from freshman guard Harmony Philo.

Turnovers have been an issue with Queens losing the ball 22.4 times a game while only forcing a dozen. As a result, their opponents have attempting 53 more shots this season.

Last November, Bentley earned a 91-64 win at Queens on the strength of a .583 field goal percentage and nine three-pointers in 18 attempts. Six Falcons scored in doubles with Victoria Lux leading the way with 18 and Lewis adding 14.
