Off to 10-0 Start, Bentley Launches 5-Game Homestand Tuesday vs. Merrimack

WALTHAM, Mass. – Despite spending most of the first month of the season on the road, the Bentley University women's basketball team is off to a 10-0 start for the first time since the undefeated national championship season of 2013-14. Only two of the ten were played in the Dana Center.

The lopsided ratio of away and home games will balance out, beginning Tuesday night, when the Falcons begin a five-game homestand with a 6 pm match-up with Merrimack College. All the games will be webcast on NE10 NOW, which is available free of charge on your personal devices, Android TV, Apple TV and ROKU TV.

It won't be an easy stretch as the homestand also includes visits from Molloy, USciences, LIU Post and Le Moyne. All five own winning records and are a combined 34-10.

Merrimack will come into the Dana owning records of 6-4 overall and 2-4 Northeast-10. All six Warrior wins have come against teams with sub-.500 records, including Saturday's 77-59 victory over St. Michael's, and the four losses have been against teams that are, or were, regionally-ranked: Assumption, Southern New Hampshire, Stonehill and Saint Anselm. With the exception of a ten-point loss to Saint Anselm, each was decided by five or less.

Bentley, ranked fifth (WBCA) and third (D2SIDA) in last week's Division II national polls, kept its record perfect with a 60-51 win at Saint Anselm Saturday. The Falcons suffered through their poorest shooting performance of the season (.333 overall, 2/11 from deep) but countered by limiting the Hawks to just 28 percent shooting.

The play of senior guard and tri-captain Amy McConnell (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor HS) was key to the victory over the Hawks. She scored a career-high 19 points while making seven of 11 shots inside the arc and also equaled her career-best with five steals.

McConnell has elevated her season scoring norm to 9.8 after reaching double figures in three straight games. During that span, she's averaged 14.3 points on 60 percent shooting overall and 63 percent from downtown.

Three Falcons are currently averaging in doubles, including senior center and tri-captain Victoria Lux (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy). Lux, who provides the Falcons with 13 points and 7.1 rebounds a game, is three points away from becoming the 36th player in program history to reach the 1,000 milestone.

Women's Basketball Hall of Fame coach Barbara Stevens, whose victory total stands at 1,021, also receives 13.6 points a game from sophomore guard Katie Meriggioli (Waunakee, Wis./Edgewood HS) and 10.7 from senior tri-captain Megan Lewis (Sevenoaks, England).

Bentley, one of a dozen remaining unbeatens in Division II, leads the nation in three-point accuracy (.443) and is also ranked in the top ten in scoring (81.9), scoring margin (+23.5), three-pointers made (9.0), assists per game (19.9) and assist-turnover ratio (1.3).

Merrimack is the second most prolific three-point shooting team in the conference with an 8.5 per-game norm. Senior guard Lindsay Werner and freshman guard Kate Mager have both connected 21 times from deep, sophomore forward Mayson Kimball has made 18 and sophomore wing Alyssa Carey has 17.

Werner and Casey are the top scorers, at 16.0 and 14.7 respectively, and Kimball is the team's other double-figure scorer (12.5).

Inside, six-foot-one Denia Davis-Stewart has rejected a Division II-high 42 shots while averaging 9.7 points and 8.9 rebounds.

Bentley, 69-13 in the all-time series that will end after this year with Merrimack shifting to Division I, has won eight straight against the Warriors, including 80-59 and 68-49 last season.

The Falcons will continue the homestand with a Sunday matinee against Molloy College.
