Unbeaten Bentley On the Road Again for Saturday Game at Bridgeport

WALTHAM, Mass. – Following a successful home opener that elevated the record to 5-0, it is back on the road for the Bentley University women's basketball team.

Coach Barbara Stevens' nationally-ranked team (seventh D2SIDA, eighth WBCA) will be at the University of Bridgeport Saturday with opening tip slated for 2 pm. A webcast will be available at http://eccsportsnetwork.com.

Bentley is very familiar with playing away from Waltham. In fact, by the time the Falcons play Bridgeport Saturday and Franklin Pierce Wednesday, they'll have played six of seven on the road.

The Falcons are coming off a hard-fought 83-71 win over Assumption College Tuesday night in the second Northeast-10 game of the year. That game, which included 11 lead changes and six ties, saw Bentley erupt for 31 points on 71 percent shooting in the fourth quarter after trailing for 20:43 of the first three periods.

For the fourth time in five games, Bentley had at least five players score in doubles. Senior center Victoria Lux (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) led the starting unit with 14 points and eight rebounds, and the duo of junior forward Monica Viapiano (Holden/Wachusett Reg. HS) and freshman guard Kolleen Bouchard (Houlton, Maine/Houlton HS) combined for 27 points on 13-of-15 shooting off the bench.

Lux, 50 points away from 1,000 for her career, leads the balanced Bentley attack with averages of 16.6 points and 7.2 rebounds. She's achieved her 83 points in only 107 minutes of action.

Bentley's other two double-figure scorers are sophomore guard Katie Meriggioli (Waunakee, Wis./Edgewood HS) and senior Megan Lewis (Sevenoaks, England). Meriggioli averages 12.4 points and 6.4 rebounds while Lewis produces 11.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and three assists a game.

The team has made nearly 49 percent of its shot attempts this season with Viapiano (.654), Lewis (.552), Meriggioli (.537) and Bouchard (.520) all over .500.

Bentley will be taking on a Bridgeport team that is off to a 1-2 start under first-year head coach Janie Mitchell. After losses to New Haven (54-31) and Southern Connecticut (73-55), the Purple Knights earned win number one against Wilmington, 78-70, on Nov. 16.

Bridgeport is led by six-foot-five center Samnell Vonleh, who averages 12.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and two blocks. Her career totals include 226 rejections, including 70 while wearing a Saint Anselm uniform back in 2015-16.

Bentley leads the all-time series, including an 84-44 victory last November, but came up short in its last trip to Harvey Hubbell Gym, 64-60 in two seasons ago.
