WALTHAM – Macchi Smith was waiting for her opportunity to make all the difference.
Megan Lewis was waiting for her chance to feel like herself again.
Together, the pair of Bentley University women's basketball players combined to anchor a thrilling comeback in the Northeast-10 championship game against Stonehill College on Sunday as the Falcons now look forward to a return trip to Easton this weekend for the NCAA Championships.
For Smith, it was seven points in overtime – including the game-winning 3-pointer with 3.8 seconds left – that put the finishing touches on the 73-72 victory. For Lewis, it was a long road back to the top of the ladder for a player who was a cornerstone of the Northeast-10 champion two years ago, then missed an entire season with a torn right anterior cruciate ligament, before overcoming a season of stops and starts for a spectacular conference tournament.
The England native had her three highest-scoring games of the season during the tournament, earning MVP honors with 22 points, five 3-pointers, 11 rebounds, four steals and a block in the final that was played on the campus of Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island Sunday afternoon due to a power outage at Stonehill.
