Green & M. Smith Will Serve as Bentley Women’s Basketball Captains

WALTHAM, Mass. – Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./Damascus HS) and Macchi Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School will serve as captains of the 2017-18 Bentley University women's basketball team, Women's Basketball Hall of Fame coach Barbara Stevens announced.

Both averaged in double figures and earned second-team All-Northeast-10 Conference honors last winter while helping the Falcons to a 26-6 record and the NE10 Northeast Division regular season title.

"Lauren and Macchi were outstanding choices as captains this year, possessing experience and knowledge to lead our team," praised Stevens. "Both are high character individuals who lead by example and have proven to be trusted teammates and solid role models.  Since coming to Bentley as freshmen, they have established themselves as two of the more talented players in the NE10 and are extremely motivated to help this team be as good as it can be.

Green, who eclipsed the 1,000-point mark last season, averaged a career-best 12.3 points while knocking down 79 three-pointers. That led the Northeast-10 and was the third most in program history. She begins this season with 184 career triples, fifth most ever by a Falcon.

Smith, the 2016-17 NE10 leader in free throw percentage, gave the Falcons 11.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.5 steals last winter while starting all 32 games. She was the only player in the conference to average at least 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Of the eight returning All-Conference performers this season, they are one of only two sets of teammates.

Bentley opens its season this weekend in Philadelphia with games against Holy Family Friday at 5 pm and Wilmington (Del.) at the same time Saturday.
