Riding 10-Game Win Streak, No. 15 Bentley Prepares for Senior Day Game vs. Saint Anselm

WALTHAM, Mass. – After extending its winning streak to ten, the Bentley University women's basketball team will be back in the Dana Center Saturday evening – a rare 6 pm start – when it hosts Saint Anselm College on Senior Day. A free webcast will be available at www.bentleyfalcons.tv.

It'll be the final regular season home game for the Falcons, who are 15th in the latest WBCA Division II coaches' poll and trail both Adelphi University and Queens College in the NCAA Division II East Region rankings. Bentley, assured of being the top seed from the Northeast-10 Conference's Northeast Division for the upcoming conference championships, will enter the night owning records of 22-4 overall, 18-1 in the conference and 12-1 at home.

Saint Anselm, eighth in this past week's regional rankings, is tied with Assumption for second in the Northeast. The Hawks have won nine of their last 11 to improve to 17-8 overall and 12-7 NE10.

Prior to the game, Bentley will recognize its four seniors for their contributions over the past four seasons. They are All-America forward Jen Gemma (Milton/Fontbonne Academy), center Melina Kollia (Athens, Greece), forward Julia Davis (Ipswich/Ipswich HS) and team manager Sarah Winkler.

Gemma's achievements while becoming the first player in program history with over 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds have been well documented. She averaged ten points a game for Bentley's 2014 national championship team as a freshman and has led the team in scoring the last three years with her current average standing at 18.6.

Gemma has averaged 20.6 points and 10.4 rebounds during the current win streak while moving to within 70 points of Lauren Battista's school scoring record of 2,112.

Kollia, who graduated in only three years and is now pursuing her Masters, has appeared in 102 career games, providing frontcourt depth. This season, she's averaged 2.9 points and 2.3 rebounds while playing about ten minutes a game.

Davis joined the team as a walk-on forward as a sophomore and is now a Falcon co-captain along with Gemma. She's been in ten games this season and gave the Falcons 11 minutes, three points and three assists in Wednesday's 70-48 win at St. Michael's.

Gemma (18.6 ppg) is followed in the scoring column by a pair of junior guards, Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./Damascus HS) and Macchi Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) at 12.1 and 11.5, respectively. Green, 57 points away from 1,000, is second in the NE10 in threes (64) and third in accuracy from downtown (.405).

Both Bentley and Saint Anselm have been playing solid defense of late. The Falcons have allowed only 83 total points in their last two games while the Hawks have held six of their last eight to 55 or less.

Saint Anselm features senior guard Candace Andrews, the number five scorer in the NE10 as well as the conference's leader in assists (138) and steals (86). She's coming off a 26-point night in the Hawks' 63-53 win over Stonehill on Wednesday and has had at least three steals in eight straight games.

Six-foot-one seniors Caitlyn Abela and Kaila Duarte are also key performers for Saint Anselm. Abela has 51 threes and a 10.8 scoring average while Duarte provides nine points and 9.4 rebounds a game.

In the Nov. 30 meeting of the two teams, Bentley used a 23-8 third quarter to prevail by 13, 67-54. Gemma and Green combined for 39 for the Falcons while Andrews filled the stat sheet with 21 points, seven rebounds, six steals and eight turnovers for Saint Anselm.

Before hosting a Northeast-10 quarterfinal game on Sunday, Feb. 26, coach Barbara Stevens' Falcons will finish the regular season at Merrimack College Tuesday.
