No. 20 Bentley Visits Saint Rose Wednesday, Seeking 12th Win in 13 Conference Games

WALTHAM, Mass. – After a 3-0 homestand, the Bentley University women's basketball team will be on the road twice this week, beginning Wednesday night when the Falcons will be attempting to snap The College of Saint Rose's five-game home winning streak. Tip off at the Nolan Gymnasium is 5:30 pm.

Bentley will make the trip to Albany, N.Y. owning records of 15-4 overall and 11-1 in the Northeast-10. Coach Barbara Stevens' club, ranked 20th in this week's WBCA Division II coaches'poll and 22nd in the D2SIDA media poll, sits atop the Northeast Division standings, owning a three-game lead  over both Assumption and St. Michael's.

Saint Rose, which has split its last four games after stringing together six straight wins, is third in the NE10's Southwest Division, trailing Adelphi University by six games but only one game back of second-place American International. The Golden Knights are 11-7 overall and 6-6 in conference play.

Bentley senior All-America Jen Gemma (Milton/Fontbonne Academy), the reigning Northeast-10 Player of the Year, enters this week's action an even 100 points away from 2,000 for her career and 52 rebounds shy of 1,000. She totaled 64 points during the Falcons' last three games, and has averaged 12.3 points the last four games.

Gemma is fourth in the NE10 in scoring at 18 a game and she leads the team in a number of categories, including rebounding (7.5), field goal percentage (.466) and free throws (80-97).

Also averaging in doubles for the Falcons are junior guards Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./ Damascus HS) and Macchi Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School). Green shoots 42 percent from outside the arc with a team-leading 50 triples and is averaging 12.4 points overall. Smith fills the stat sheet with 11.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.5 steals a game. Over the last two games, she's totaled 16 points, 19 rebounds and 14 assists.

Trevena Bennett (Union, N.J./Gill St. Bernard HS) has been playing well of late, averaging 11.3 points in the last four games. She's made at least one three in six straight games and is 10 of 18 from outside the arc in the last three.

Bentley sports the conference's most productive offense, ranking first among the 15 teams in scoring (70.4), field goal percentage (.437) and assists (15.7). Coach Barbara Stevens' team is also second in the other two shooting categories, making 35 percent of its threes and 75 percent of its free throws.

While the Falcons averaged 78 points during its homestand, Saint Rose has been held under 60 in seven of its last nine, including only 51 in a 22-point loss to St. Michael's on Saturday.

Seniors Taylor Nazon and Staci Barrett are the top scorers for coach Karen Haag's team, averaging 13.2 and 12.3 points, respectively. Nazon (24 triples) and sophomore guard Ashley Vanderwall (23) are the Knights' top three-point threats , and Barrett is a strong rebounder, pulling in 7.5 a game.

 Vanderwall (10.8) and six-foot sophomore Karissa Birthwright (10.3) are the other double-figure scorers for Saint Rose. Birthwright blocks more than a shot a game and also owns a .527 field goal percentage, second best in the conference.

Bentley is also on the road Saturday when it will play a 1:30 game at Southern Connecticut.
