Bridgeport Hands Bentley 2nd Straight Loss, 64-60

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Two lay-ups by senior guard Camera Miley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) highlighted a 5-0 closing burst by the Purple Knights and gave the University of Bridgeport a 64-60 non-conference win over Bentley University in women's college basketball Sunday afternoon at the Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium.

It was the second loss in as many days for Bentley, which was ranked number one in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division II poll. The Falcons dropped to 5-2 on the season while Bridgeport bumped its record to 4-1.

Junior guard Macchi Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) led Bentley in scoring, finishing with 13 points. Backcourt mate Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./Damascus HS) followed with 12, all from downtown, and senior All-America forward Jen Gemma (Milton, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) finished with 10 points.

Five players scored in doubles for Bridgeport, a list headed by junior guard Aurelie Leblanc-Florent (Longueuil, Quebec) with 16, and Miley followed with nine.

Bentley's biggest lead of the afternoon came in the second quarter, an 8-0 spurt putting the Falcons up 21-12 with 5:33 to play in the opening half. Gemma tallied the final six after an inside basket from graduate center Melina Kollia (Athens, Greece).

Bridgeport, down 29-23 at the half, made eight of its first 12 shots in the third to claim a 44-43 lead.

The Falcons countered by scoring the next eight, a run sandwiched around the quarter break, to go up 51-44 about 40 seconds into the final stanza. Smith keyed the spurt by scoring the first four before the third quarter ended.

Leblanc-Florent tied the game at 55 with a left-wing three with 5:34 remaining and gave Bridgeport its first lead since first quarter, 57-55.

Bentley twice regained the lead, 58-57 on a three from junior guard Cassie Smith (Edison, N.J./ Metuchen HS) and 60-59 with 1:31 on two free throws by Macchi Smith. Miley replied for Bridgeport, hitting a reverse lay-up with 1:16 left and making another basket with 21.4 seconds remaining for a 63-60 advantage.

After the Falcons didn't score on their next possession, Leblanc-Florent hit one of two from the line with 8.8 seconds left for Bridgeport's biggest lead of the game.

Bentley's three double-digit scorers all provided three assists and Macchi Smith led the Falcons in rebounds with nine. Bentley also received eight points apiece from Kollia and senior forward Parker Gregory (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay HS).

The Falcons finished with a 45-36 advantage in rebounds but it was the Purple Knights who had the game's top rebounder. Senior forward Evelyn Ovner (Vallentuna, Sweden) collected 13, including five at the offensive end, and finished with 12 points and three steals.

Bridgeport held the shooting advantage 44-32 percent and came up with 19 defensive plays, with 12 steals and seven blocks, six of the rejections by Saint Anselm transfer Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.).

Free throws were a plus for the visitors with Bentley a perfect 12-for-12, evenly split between Gemma and Macchi Smith.

Bentley will look to get back on track Wednesday when it resumes Northeast-10 action at Saint Anselm.
