National Champion Bentley Ranked #1 in Final USA TODAY Sports/WBCA Poll
WALTHAM, Mass. – Four days after capturing the program's first-ever national championship and completing a perfect 35-0 season, the Bentley University Falcons were voted number one in the USA TODAY Sports/WBCA Division II coaches poll.
Coach Barbara Stevens' team received 30 of 31 first-place votes, with the other going to 30-2 Colorado Mesa, and a total of 774 points. West Texas A&M University, who the Falcons rallied to beat in the championship game, was second with 742.
Also in the top six were two other teams Bentley saw during the Elite Eight, fifth-ranked Drury University and sixth-ranked Cal Poly Pomona.
Bentley, just the second unbeaten national champion in Division II history, became the first team to spend the entire season at number one since the University of North Dakota in 1999 and its 15 straight polls at number one tied the all-time record, set by Cal Poly Pomona in the mid-80's.
In the final NCAA Division II statistics, Bentley was first in winning percentage (1.000) and scoring margin (+21.6), second in rebound margin (+11.0), sixth in scoring offense (81.6) and field goal percentage (.467), seventh in assist-turnover ratio (1.23) and ninth in assists (17.6).
Senior guard Christiana Bakolas (Manchester, N.H./Central HS) finished fourth in assist-turnover ratio (2.52) and tenth in assists (5.5), and three-time WBCA All-America Lauren Battista (North Easton/Oliver Ames HS) was tenth in field goal percentage (.575).
