Holy Family Advances in NCAA East Regional behind Carr’s 29 Points

Waltham, Mass. - Senior Catherine Carr (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Holy Family University women's basketball team to a 79-67 victory over conference rival Goldey-Beacom College in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II East Regional at the Dana Center on the campus of Bentley University Friday afternoon.

Second seeded Holy Family, ranked 18th in the recent USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II National Top-25 Coaches' Poll, improves to 24-4 overall with the victory and is advancing to the regional semifinals for the sixth straight year.  Goldey-Beacom, who was competing in its first ever NCAA Tournament contest as the number seven seed, concludes the season at 18-12.

This afternoon's match up marked the fourth time these two teams have met this season and the second time in less than a week.  In the previous meeting on March 5, Goldey-Beacom stunned Holy Family, 66-54, in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship final.  This time around, it was Holy Family coming up on the winning end of a season-long rivalry.

Carr led all scorers with a game-high 29 points to go along with a game-best 14 rebounds to record her third double-double of the season.  She also converted 10-of-11 attempts from the free throw line, dished out five assists and collected four steals.  With her performance, Carr now has 1,975 career-points and is only 25 points away from 2,000 points for her career.

Senior Lindsey Tennett (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) scored 15 points off the bench for the Tigers after shooting 7-of-13 from the field.  Fellow classmate Meghan Gibson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) finished with eight points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Erin Mann (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored eight points and grabbed 12 rebounds.  Mann also recorded five blocked shots.

For Goldey-Beacom, junior Jacinda Jones scored a team-high 21 points to lead the Lightning's offense.  Jones also dished out seven assists and grabbed six rebounds.  Goldey-Beacom had a pair of sophomores come off the bench and contribute in double-figures as Ashley Rosario scored 15 points and Irene Hudson tallied 12 points.

Holy Family struggled from the field early on as the Tigers shot 3-of-14 the first 7:30 minutes of the game. However, after a pair of free throws from freshman Katie Duma (Poestenkill, N.Y./Averill Park), that tied the game and then gave Holy Family the lead, the Tigers went on a 14-5 run to lead by eight points with 9:12 remaining in the half.  Holy Family led 20-12 after Tennett scored a layup to cap the run.

Later in the half, Holy Family increased its lead to as many as 15 points in the first stanza after Tennett scored another layup to give the Tigers a 38-23 lead with less than two minutes to play before halftime.

Goldey-Beacom was able to hold Holy Family scoreless the rest of the half and was also able to cut into the Tigers' lead after Jones drained two three-pointers on back-to-back possessions.  Holy Family led 38-29 as the teams entered the lockers at halftime.

In the second half, Holy Family increased its lead to as many as 18 points on two different occasions and seemed to be running away with the game.  However, Goldey-Beacom went on 16-5 run midway through the half and came within seven points of the Holy Family lead after Jones converted a pair of free throws to make the score 60-53 with 9:33 to play.

Despite the rally, Holy Family was again able to increase its lead to double-digits after Carr scored a layup to give the Tigers a 64-53 lead with 7:33 on the clock.

Goldey-Beacom rallied yet again and cut the Holy Family lead to just six points after senior Janae Weldon drained a three-pointer to make the score 64-58 with just over five minutes to play in regulation.  That's as close as the Lightning would get though, as Holy Family held Goldey-Beacom in check outscoring them 15-9 the rest of the way.

Both teams shot almost identical from the field as Holy Family knocked down 38.4-percent of its shots, while Goldey-Beacom shot 36.2-percent from the field.  The Tigers held the advantage from three-point shooting and free throws.  Holy Family shot 36.4-percent (8-22) and 83.3-percent (15-18) from the charity stripe compared to Goldey-Beacom's 14.3-percent (3-21) shooting from deep and 60.9-percent (14-23) shooting from the free throw line.

Holy Family will face #6 Pace University in the regional semifinals at 12 p.m. on Sunday, March 13.  Pace defeated the three-time reigning regional champion, third-seeded Franklin Pierce University, 64-62 in the first quarterfinal contest of the day.
