Bentley Sweeps New Haven to Earn Double Bye in NE10 Championships

WEST HAVEN, Conn.  – Junior shortstop Sabrina Grizzaffi (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield HS) was 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored as Bentley University defeated the University of New Haven, 8-1, in the first half of a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader Tuesday on the UNH Softball Field.

Bentley completed the sweep with a 5-3 win in game two, a game that saw the Falcons score three times on a Charger fielding error with two outs in the seventh.

With the sweep, Bentley secured a double-bye in next week's NE10 championship tournament. The Falcons also extended the school record for wins in a season, improving to 27-12-1 overall and 18-5-1 conference.

In the opening, graduate catcher Ella Hillier (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) singled and scored on an error in the third for the Falcons' first run.  Bentley added a second run in the fourth when Grizzaffi led off with an infield single and scored on a single through the left side by sophomore left fielder Jordan Krause (San Pedro, Calif./San Pedro HS). It was her second hit of the game and 58th of the season, one shy of the program record. Krause had two more hits in game two to both tie and break the school record set by Mary Jane Kelly back in 1989.

Bentley broke the game open with four runs in the fifth. Grizzaffi, who has 15 hits in her last eight games, had an RBI single, and three runs scored on a single to third by junior right fielder Kylee Amato (Bergenfield, N.J./Acad. of the Holy Angels). She picked up one RBI on the play with the other two runs scoring on the last of seven New Haven errors.

Bentley completed the scoring with a two-run single by Grizzaffi in the sixth.

Combining on the four-hitter were junior Payton Doiron (Beacon Falls, Conn./St. Joseph HS) and sophomore Dahlia Fink (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Notre Dame HS). Doiron, 12-4 on the season, pitched into the fifth and struck out six, pushing her school record season total to 152. Fink secured her third save with three scoreless innings.

In addition to the four from Grizzaffi, Bentley's 12 hits included two apiece from Amato, Krause and Hillier. Hillier moved past Stacey Korotsky '21 into second on the program's all-time hit list with 154.

In game two, Bentley fell behind early with New Haven (15-28, 10-10 NE10) striking for three runs in the second.

The Falcons got one back in the fourth on an RBI single by Fink and made it a 3-2 game on a bases-loaded fielder's choice that scored Krause.

In the top of the seventh, senior center fielder Sam Petow (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS) singled to short. Krause hit into a fielder's choice, but Petow beat the throw to second to keep the inning going. Hillier reached on an infield single to load the bases and senior first baseman Kaylee Mankins (North Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan HS) skyed to first. It resulted in a fielding error and all three base runners were able to score to give Bentley the lead.

The Chargers got a lead-off walk in the bottom of the seventh, but Doiron closed the door with a strikeout, fly ball to right and pop-up to second. She earned her 13th win of the season after pitching the final 2.1 innings without allowing a hit and striking out four. Bentley also received three solid innings of relief from Funk.

Bentley's eight hits included two apiece from Krause and Petow.
