Bentley Breaks Win Record as Doiron & O’Brien Post Back-to-Back Shutouts; 16K’s for Doiron

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Payton Doiron (Beacon Falls, Conn./St. Joseph HS) pitched a two-hit 10-inning shutout with a school record 16 strikeouts and senior center fielder Sam Petow (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS) drove in the game's only run with a triple as Bentley University captured game one of Saturday's doubleheader, 1-0 over Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference softball on Pelz Field.

Bentley completed the doubleheader sweep with an 8-0 six-inning victory in game two with sophomore Taylor O'Brien (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia HS) authoring a one-hit shutout.

The wins boosted the Falcons to 25-12-1 overall and 16-5-1 Northeast-10. The 25 wins are the most in program history, surpassing the 24 victories from a year ago. Southern Connecticut dropped to 12-24 overall and 7-13 conference.

Doiron, who had previously broken the Bentley single season strikeout record, bettered the mark of 12 that Cindy Caouette set 38 years ago against Lesley College. Doiron, who struck out the side in the first and fourth innings, moved into second on the program's all-time list with her total climbing to 250.

Doiron fanned the final two hitters in the first after the Owls had the bases loaded with no outs. She also stranded runners on the corners in the tenth when Petow snared a liner to center.

Junior shortstop Sabrina Grizzaffi (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield HS) began the top of the tenth on second as the ghost runner and was sacrificed to third. Petow tripled to the left field corner, with Grizzaffi easily scoring the game's only run.

Bentley finished with eight hits, half of those from Petow out of the Falcons' lead off spot in the lineup.

The offense came alive in the nightcap with the Falcons scoring twice in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings.

Senior first baseman Kaylee Mankins (North Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan HS) had a two-run double in the first. In the second, two errors allowed junior catcher Jacqueline Cupoli (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse HS) and junior Kylee Amato (Bergenfield, N.J./Acad. of the Holy Angels) to score.

Senior third baseman Jess Trahan (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack HS) had an RBI single in the fifth and Cupoli drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run. The Owls' third error of the game allowed Amato and Petow to score unearned runs in the sixth.

Amato, graduate designated hitter Ella Hillier (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS), Mankins and Trahan all had two hits. O'Brien retired the first ten batters she faced and lost her no-hit bid on a one-out double in the fourth. She walked one and struck out two.

Bentley will wrap up its conference schedule Tuesday with a doubleheader at New Haven. The games were originally scheduled for Sunday but were moved to the expected inclement weather.
