Milestones for Doiron & Hillier, but Bentley Falls to Assumption Twice

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior pitcher Payton Doiron (Beacon Falls, Conn./St. Joseph HS) and graduate catcher Ella Hillier (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) achieved personal milestones, but the Bentley University softball team dropped a pair to Assumption University Wednesday afternoon, 1-0 and 8-3, in Northeast-10 Conference softball on the Falcons' new field.

Doiron, the hard-luck loser in game one despite pitching a three-hitter, struck out eight to push her season total of 130. That broke the mark that belonged to Tara Fogarty since 2011 by three.

Hillier had a single in each game and became only the third Falcon to reach the 150 career hit milestone.

The two losses dropped Bentley to 23-12-1 overall and 14-5-1 NE10, still good for second place behind Adelphi. Assumption improved to 17-13 overall and 9-7 conference, good for a tie for sixth.

Game one was a pitchers' duel between Doiron and Assumption freshman Kaelin Waldron (Griswold, Conn.), who was replaced in the seventh by sophomore lefty Anna Tassone (Gardner). Waldron matched Doiron's three-hitter and struck out two in her six innings of work.

The only run was scored in the top of the seventh. After a double by sophomore third baseman Mackenzie Bruggleman (Trumbull, Conn.) and a sacrifice, a single to center by freshman designated player Heather Junjulas (Clifton Park, N.J.) scored sophomore pinch-runner Raigan Gregoire (Worcester).

Bentley's best scoring opportunity came in the third when Waldron escaped a first-and-third situation with a pop out to second.

In game two, the Greyhounds put runs on the scoreboard in five of seven innings, including two in the fifth to break a 3-3 tie. Those came on a two-run homer to straightaway center by Bruggleman, her fourth of the year.

Bentley's offense included two hits, including a two-run double to center by senior center fielder Sam Petow (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS), and two by sophomore left fielder Jordan Krause (San Pedro, Calif./San Pedro HS), who is now batting .437, second in the conference.

Bentley is on the road for the rest of the regular season, beginning with a doubleheader at Southern Connecticut State Saturday.
