Grizzaffi & Doiron Help 1st-Place Bentley Take Game 1; Franklin Pierce Prevails in Nightcap

RINDGE, N.H. -- Junior shortstop Sabrina Grizzaffi (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield HS) drove in two runs and junior right-hander Payton Doiron (Beacon Falls, Conn./St. Joseph HS) struck out nine as Bentley University posted a 4-2 game one win over Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference softball Friday afternoon at Bisaccia Field.

Franklin Pierce came back to take the nightcap, 7-5, to gain a split of the twinbill.

Despite the loss in game two, Bentley (17-9, 8-2 NE10) remains in sold possession of first place in the conference with a two-game lead over Adelphi, Saint Anselm, Pace and Franklin Pierce.

In the fourth inning of the opener, with Bentley facing a 1-0 deficit, junior Kylee Amato (Bergenfield, N.J./Acad. of the Holy Angels) was hit by a pitch and sophomore designated player Dahlia Fink (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Notre Dame HS) doubled to left center. Amato scored on Grizzaffi's single to third and a single to left by senior center fielder Sam Petow (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury/HS) brought in Fink.

Bentley scored two more runs in the fifth. Fink had an RBI single to left center and Grizzaffi drove in a run with a single to right.

The Falcons' 13-hit attack included three apiece from Petow and Fink, as well as two from both Grizzaffi and graduate catcher Ella Hillier (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS).

Doiron struck out nine in five innings of work while earning her seventh win of the season. Sophomore Taylor O'Brien (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia HS) came on for the final two innings and gained the save.

In game two, Bentley overcame an early 4-0 deficit by scoring five runs in the third inning. Sophomore left fielder Jordan Krause (San Pedro, Calif./San Pedro HS), senior first baseman Kaylee Mankins (North Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan HS) and senior third baseman Jess Trahan (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack HS) each had RBI singles and Fink had a two-run single.

Franklin Pierce (20-11, 4-2 NE10) regained the lead with two runs in the fifth inning. Freshman Hannah Wodecki (Southampton, Mass.) had an RBI triple to break a 5-5 deadlock and later scored the Ravens' seventh run.

Bentley's 11 hits included two apiece for Amato, Hillier, Fink and Trahan.

Bentley (17-9, 8-2 NE10) will play a doubleheader at St. Michael's College Saturday.
