Bentley Bounces Back for Game 2 Win at Le Moyne, Ties School Record for Wins

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Dahlia Fink (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Notre Dame HS) pitched the first five innings and the final two-thirds as Bentley University bounced back from a difficult game one loss to shut out Le Moyne College, 2-1, in the second half of a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at the Le Moyne Softball Complex.

Despite the 2-1 eight-inning loss in the opener, the Falcons tied the school record for wins in a season (21) and finished the day in a three-way tie for sixth in the conference standings. Le Moyne, which is in ninth place, has records of 10-12 NE10 and 18-20 overall.

Bentley (21-17, 11-11 NE10) took the lead in the second inning. Graduate third baseman Kaileen Cain (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge HS) singled to right, was sacrificed to second and scored on a double to right center by freshman designated player Katie Welch (Monroe, Conn./Masuk HS).

An inning later, junior center fielder Sam Petow (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS) made it 2-0 with a bases-loaded ground out.

Fink combined with sophomore Payton Doiron (Beacon Falls, Conn./St. Joseph HS) and freshman Kim Saunders (Stamford, Conn./Stamford HS) on the five-hit shutout. Fink gave up four hits over the first five innings, Doiron pitched the sixth and Saunders got the first out of the seventh. Following a walk, Fink returned to the center circle and closed out the victory.

In the opener, Bentley took a 1-0 lead on a fourth inning home run to right center by Cain. It was her eighth of the season and ninth career, extending her own school records.

Le Moyne answered in the sixth in a home run by freshman designated player Alyssa Dybacz (Baldwinsville, N.Y.).

After the Dolphins (the designated visiting team) scored a run in the top of the eighth, Bentley threatened in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with no outs. A fly ball to left resulted in a double play when the runner on third left early, and sophomore pitcher Laura Bennett (Corning, N.Y.) got the final out on a fly ball to right center.

In the doubleheader, both Cain and freshman left fielder Jordan Krause (San Pedro, Calif./San [Pedro HS) had three hits. Cain was also hit by a pitch three times as she reached base in six of seven plate appearances.

Bentley will return home to take on St. Michael's College Thursday at 3:00. The two teams will resume a doubleheader suspended April 9, with the Falcons leading the opener 6-5 in the sixth, before playing the second game.
