Doiron Extends Streak as Bentley Outlasts Pace in Game 2 to Earn Split

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Sophomore Payton Doiron (Beacon Falls, Conn./St. Joseph HS) provided six-and-two-thirds innings of scoreless relief, extending her streak to 19.1 innings, as Bentley University outlasted Pace University, 4-3, in game two of a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader at the Pace Softball Field Tuesday.

The win gave the Falcons a split after Pace took the opener by an identical score.

With the international tiebreaker in effect, Bentley began the tenth inning with sophomore left fielder Kylee Amato (Bergenfield, N.J./Acad. of the Holy Angels) on second base. She moved to third on a ground out and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

Doiron retired the Setters in order in the bottom of the inning, on a fly out, a line out and a pop out, to complete an outstanding relief performance and earn her fourth win. She allowed only three hits and one walk while striking out four.

During her last 19.1 innings of work, she's given up only ten hits and has struck out 20.

Bentley took a 3-0 lead in the third inning on back-to-back doubles by graduate designated player Kaileen Cain (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge HS) and junior first baseman Kaylee Mankins (North Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan HS). Cain drove in two, pushing her season total of 27 (third in the conference), and Mankins drove in Cain.

After Pace (21-10, 9-7 NE10) battled back with three in the fourth, Bentley (16-14, 6-8 NE10) threatened in the seventh. The Falcons had runners on the corners with two outs but were unable to score.

In the opener, Bentley was down 4-0 heading into the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out, Amato made it a one-run game with a three-run double to left center.  The Falcons apparently scored the tying run on a single by Cain, but interference was called for the second out. A strikeout ended the game and the Falcons' hopes for a comeback.

It was a 1-0 game until Pace scored three times in the sixth inning, including two on a double by junior Gwen Pederson (Sylmar, Calif).

Bentley's ten hits included three by Amato. During the two contests, she was four for seven with four RBI and two runs scored. Junior center fielder Sam Petow (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS) and Cain both had three hits in the doubleheader and Mankins had three in game two.

Bentley remains on the road to face Assumption University in a doubleheader Thursday at Worcester State.
