This Day in Bentley History - April 28, 2013: Thibodeau Closes Career in Style, with Game-Winning HR in 8th

Chances are that Bentley University senior catcher Erica Thibodeau (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker HS) will never forget her final collegiate at bat as a member of the Falcon softball team.

On this day in 2013, Thibodeau drilled a two-run homer to left in the top of the eighth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie and propelling Bentley to a 3-1 win over St. Michael's in the non-conference portion of a season-ending doubleheader at Doc Jacobs Field.  3-1 was also the score in opener, a Northeast-10 Conference game won by St. Michael's with a late rally

Her third career round tripper, and first since the 2011 season, followed a lead-off single by sophomore left fielder Shannon Connor (West Haven, Conn./West Haven HS) and a sacrifice bunt. The hit was Connor's third of the nightcap and boosted her final average to a team-leading .336.

Bentley took a 1-0 game two lead in the second. Senior second baseman Laura McDonough (Braintree, Mass./Braintree HS) led off with a single, was sacrificed to second and scored on an RBI single by freshman designated player Halley McDevitt (San Ramon, Calif./San Ramon Valley HS).

It stayed that way until the sixth when the Purple Knights (4-39, 4-17 Northeast) strung together three straight singles. The third in that stretch, by center fielder Stephanie Frank (Essex, Vt./Essex HS), drove in junior Greer Lemnah (Lyndon Center, Vt.) with the tying run.

McDevitt gained the win with 2.2 innings of two-hit relief.

In the opener, Bentley carried a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth after freshman shortstop Alex Borrelli (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic HS) singled and scored on an error in the second.

All three Purple Knight runs were scored after two were out, on consecutive RBI singles by junior Amanda Brigante (Colchester, Vt.), Frank and freshman Danielle DelGreco (Lexington, Mass.). Frank, in addition to driving in the game-winning run, was credited with the win after scattering seven hits.

Bentley finished the season with records of 16-27-1 overall, 9-19-1 NE-10 and 6-14-1 in the division. The Falcons had a winning record over the final 15 games, with eight victories and a tie over that stretch.
